Vacuum cleaners for pet owners

There are a number of vacuum cleaners on the market purported to be specifically aimed at pet owners, but which ones do people here recommend? I have a few dogs.

I would instinctively go for Dyson but from reading some reports they don't appear to be particularly sturdy these days.

I've recently been trying out a Shark NV680UK but while it has excellent suction and cleans extremely well the filters block up very quickly (within minutes) when hoovering my carpets so reducing suction until the filters are cleaned. This may say more about the state of my carpets, obviously my old Dyson weas missing a lot of dust and dried dirt in the pile.

I also find that the Shark's collection bin is pretty small, needing regular emptying.

What would people here recommend that has excellent suction, a good sized bin and the ability to cope well with dust and dirt without the filters needing to be cleaned every few minutes?

It's got to be Dyson for me!
I'm the recent new owner of a Dyson big ball Kinetic having finally dumped the old Dyson animal after about nine years.
I'm constantly amazed how. Uch more dirt and dust I'm picking up, an dhairs of course.
One collie lab X and a long haired cat. The stair tool is terrific too.
It creaks a bit when you lift it but that's the plastic bin, it's the mnature of the material. It does not feel flimsy in any way, I think they've just changed the type of resin used.
Easy to empty. I Hoover about half of a large house every day and empty it once a week, easy leash lemon squeezy.

We've got through two Dysons (long story, we only planned to have one). I would never have another. They were both hopeless at picking up pet hair. The bin filled up quickly and made such a mess when it was emptied. The filters were constantly dusty and didn't stop all of the particulate getting through. The hose broke on a regular basis. And ... the cat was absolutely terrified of it!

We now have a Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog Powerline and the difference is amazing. It's not bagless but the bags don't fill up that quickly. No mess when you empty it! The filters look almost dust free when you change them. We bought it locally for about £220 (less than the Dyson cost).

Best of all .... I can vacuum with a few feet of the cat without her shooting off like someone's put a rocket up her backside!

    And ... it's a Which 'Best Buy'.

  • Miele C3 Cat&Dog Powerline. Best vacuum cleaner ever, no trouble the replace the bags either. I've also got a Henry that I've had for donkeys years but it's not a patch on the Miele. I've used Dyson in the past (A DC3 years ago), but that was decidedly Meh.

If you're within range of Miele's Abingdon outlet, you can almost always pick up a B or C grade vacuum for a fraction of the cost of new.

Another vote for the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog Powerline - best vacuum cleaner we've had.

used henry hoover for a couple of notes from your local favorite ads site and you are sorted!
Don't get the unreliable piece of junk dysons, miele also isn't really as heavy-duty as the henry is.

I've got a Hoover Hurricane Power myself, Mix of carpets, laminate and tiles floors, 2 border collies in the house. Does the job, and under 100 quid so doesnt matter if it kills itself after a couple of years. I empty out the main bit every 2 or 3 days and give the filters a bang about once a week

Miele all the way, Dysons are terrible - you'll be buying another one in a few years

We recently bought a Miele C3 Powerline - we don't have pets so its not the cat & dog version - but its a very good vacuum cleaner and so I can only add to the others recommending it. I can't remember what the difference was between the two (there's actually quite a few models).

The thing I like best about it is the range of different heads (apart from needing somewhere to put them) and included accessories. With ours we got the standard switchable head for carpets and hard floors, the parquet twister which is GREAT for doing our laminate and under furniture, the turbo brush for carpets and rugs and another one for uneven wooden floors which we do not use. It also came with an upholstery, crevice and soft brush tool.

Its also surprising how quiet it is compared to a Dyson.

Only negative really is if you're used to an upright, as we were, it takes a bit of getting used to manoeuvring it around.

Oh, and do others find the bags don't last as long as expected? We don't vac daily, maybe a few times a week, but we went through the first bag in about a month. I was expecting them to last about 3 months each. I'm also not convinced by the accuracy of the bag full indicator.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Having had a chat with my wife about the Miele she unfortunately isn't keen as she prefers an upright and doesn't like the idea of spending money on bags.

So are there any upright bag-free vacuum cleaners that will suit my requirements?

    Thanks. :)
