  • Was there much to do in Thermopolis?

Not a great deal. There are hot springs in the state park which we enjoyed. It's a very small town but quite charming. Very nice Mexican food and fun Mini Golf. Plus there is the Elk Antler Inn which has elk and antlers everywhere. Worth an overnight stop.

Okay. Plans changed a wee bit. Managed to get no-commitment rooms an hour-ish away from our ultimate viewing spot.

One of the best priced flight options stops in Reykjavik (one of my most favourite places on earth) but only for an hour and a half. Thinking of spending 3 days-ish in Iceland before flying to the States. How do I find tickets that allow a longer stay on the way?

Want to focus around Denver, so Rocky Mountain and maybe Teton parks, Boulder, a drive up Pike's Peak is a must. Up to 10 days so not going to try and cram too much travel in, so Yellowstone is out.

    Any thoughts or ideas?

Grand Teton NP is just south of Yellowstone NP, so if you're ruling out Yellowstone then you're also ruling out the Tetons.

Leadville is actually a nice town, its close on to 10,000 feet though

Silverthorne has a good outlet village

    (both are west of Denver)

Apart from that I only know the ski areas and family stuff.

  • Icelandair offer three day breaks on the way to USA. At least they did a couple of years ago.
    Yellowstone is out
Make sure you do it another time then. I'd say it's better than all the stuff you're going to focus on.

Highway 67 Cañon City to Victor is a great drive if you like dirt roads, then on to Cripple Creek for the narrow gauge railroad through mining country.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

You might want to check the small print of the car rental agreement to see if it says anything about not driving on unpaved roads.

OP. check out the rafting from the Canon City area. We used Clear Creek rafting and they use rafting levels from gentle float all the way to OMG.
Very family friendly and memories for everyone.
Whilst in the Canon City locale, Skyline Drive is a must. The video doesn't do it justice !

With Alamo the CDW doesn't apply, but it's worth the risk in my view. You miss a lot of the good bits if you stay on the tarmac.
