Colorado/Yellowstone/Wyoming road trip - Aug 17?

  • We went last summer and loved it. We flew in and out of Denver (from Dublin as much cheaper) and were there for 3.5 weeks. We had a few nights in Denver (don't forget the altitude which could make you feel a bit ropey and tired at first), then went into Wyoming - Cheyenne for the rodeo, Thermopolis, Sheridan then 2 nights in Yellowstone (could have done more), Grand Teton, Driggs in Idaho, Jackson Hole, 2 nights Salt Lake City, 3 nights Moab (Arches and Canyonlands NP), Glenwood Springs, 2 nights Estes Park (Rocky Mountain NP), 2 nights Boulder then back to Denver.

Our kids loved it and we did a lot of hiking which suited us all. The scenery is stunning and I'd go back in a heartbeat. There were a few longer drives but we tried to break them up with shorter or no driving days.
"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."

I did a 3 week road trip with a 6 yr old , 14 and 19 yr old last August no problems
Drove about 6000 miles including Las Vegas , Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Salt Lake City, Yellowstone .
Had a full week in Yellowstone and loved it - did not spend hours in the car either as I broke the journeys up

Flew Westjet via Canada open jaw to Las Vegas and home from Orlando

    Any questions just ask

if you did 6000 miles over 21 days, thats an average of nearly 300 miles per day.

How did you travel nearly 300 miles a day, without spending hours in the car ?

Some days we did no driving and other days I drove at night whilst kids asleep
    It worked really well
I took my kids on my own so didn't want to drive every single day
In Yellowstone I took some of their own tours so I could see the views without having to drive

Was there much to do in Thermopolis?

I'm not being obtuse, but whether you're driving through the day, or through the night, your still chewing through multiple hours of driving to go through 6000 miles.

We never go with a set itinerary, just make it up as we go along. If you like somewhere or have had enough travelling, stay longer. If you've had enough move on.
We were eating in a Dairy Queen in Utah (the only restaurant in town had a big queue) & got chatting to another couple, his Dad had arranged the trip & booked all the accommodation. They were fed up with rushing from place to place & had decided to give up on the booked rooms & just do their own thing.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • We are due out to watch the solar eclipse and did originally look at diy this trip last year, however lots of hotels in the best viewing areas were already booked out and i wasnt confident enough so we booked a "grand america" trip through astro trails.co.uk. its a pretty much three week tour from east to west ending in san francisco. Not really my thing but i am starting to look forward to it now. Think hopefully we view eclipse near rexburg.

Can't really do that with a small child and with a set place and time we need to be.

Sounds fabulous. We have to get back for a family wedding and have limited leave else we might look at that.
