He doesn't appear to want to eat wet food we even got him some wet Royal canine urinary care food. He is drinking well a lot more than usually

Please don't give an ill cat poor quality dry food, the dehydration alone would speed up the progression of his illness.

Low protein diets haven't actually been proven to be beneficial for cats with ckd, using a phosphate binder has though.

I lost one of my cats to kidney failure.

He appeared perfectly healthy then lost a lot of weight in less than a week.
Tests showed that the condition was really bad and the vet advised us to take him home and love him and bring him back when 'it was time'.
    Which we did.

You know your cat so do the best for him.
    Best wishes.
  • I have an 18 year old female with kidney disease,
I tried all the special foods ,she wouldnt touch it,
she has whatever she wants to eat,be it prawns ,chicken, lidl food
or any type whch the other 3 are having,
she was diagnosed in april 2015 and is exactly the same as when I took her then.
I took her because she was losing weight and drinking more.
I agree with the quality of life thing ,she is still active and eats little
but often, she has her own little table in the lounge which I feed her
    on .
I know this wont work for all cats but this is nearly 2 years on and I am so grateful to have this time with her.

I just got back from vets we original going to have him put to sleep.

But vet was surprised how he looks compared with results of blood test which was at far of the scale of 4., 4 being worse. But he did say and its a big IF that it could be a blip.

He certainly perked up even as far as he didn't make noise when we pick him up. he is a lot back to his old self now running around sleeping where he normal sleeps unlike 2 days ago.

He had a shot of vitamins and vet given us Hill wet food for diet he is now on. Going in on Monday to pick up some special diet food.

I know its a big IF but he deserves a chance. Take one day as it comes even one day is nice his health and quality of life is paramount than our desire to keep him alive.

I am truly blessed to have this little man and would be very careful what he eats and drinks now if only not to make his kidneys worse. I no there still bad nothing can fix that.

    Thanks all

Thanks all he's been asleep and now eating some biscuits and now cleaning himself.

One thing he does do is sleep and sit on our ironing board on our landing he like sit there made it comfy for him

I am keeping a close eye on him and take each day as it comes I hope after advice tomorrow from vet and possible a boost from injection they did say they could dont want to drag it out if there is no hope

I miss my last boy he was around 12 and we got other cat within a week of him passing away. I miss him so much every day in think of him as i do with family that have passed away
He's (sadly) not going to get over this but posts from other people show that cats can live uite some time with this condition.

It's about quality of life - his life.
I think you'll know when the 'right' time comes.

Our beloved old boy (we lost him in 2000) got weaker very quickly.
One day, he staggered into his water bowl and - with wet feet - looked up at me as though to say 'I don't know about you, but I've just about had enough of this'.

We took him to the vets to be PTS and she said 'I think he'll go another few days'.
I could have ripped her head off!

She gave him an injection and he died in my arms.

I hope your boy continues to enjoy life - that's the important thing. :)

Please do not feed him dry food, it is no good for any cat and specifically really bad for cats with renal disease.

ANY wet food is better than dry.

Try Felix pouches but not the regular ones but the ones that have "As good as it looks" written on them. I do not know a cat that does like those.

Main thing is to get him to eat moist food so he does net get dehydrated.

Forget Royal Canin - if he does not like it. Give him something he will ENJOY eating, try several different brands if needs to be as long as he eats it really does not matter at this point what brand is it but please do not feed him dry food.

I tried wet food but seems to not like it now. I have some Hills kidney diet sackets. Vet says its okay for dry food he also said if that dont work we can sprinkle some special supplement.

My daughter has two cats and all they get apart from odd wet food is dry food.

But I will keep a very close eye on him and will weigh him regularly he has always been a skinny cat though but athletic

I hope giving his spring water is best way I did wonder between spring and mineral just want to minmise extra work for his kidneys

I am not talking special kidney food - my cat hated it too. And the stuf from the vet sprinkled onto food.

I am talking a variety of normal wet food as THIS is how to stop him getting dehydrated. Forget spring or mineral water as this really does not matter but please take him of dry food completely and only feed wet.

You do not know how much he got left - may be a month or maybe a year. Please do not listen to a vet who tells you dry food for cat with renal disease is ok as it is not ok. Vets know very little of cat nutrition.

Your daughter's 2 cats do not have a renal disease, yours does xx

my patners 10 year old persian recently died (had to be put to sleep)from kidney disease and it was quite an agressive illness as he lost quite a bit of weight and was sick quite a bit - he was diagnosed about 3 months before dying and had royal canin renal food which he liked but our other 3 persians also tried to eat it! persians are very prone to kidney disease unfortunately
