To me - it's about priorities.
I know some people are so broke that they can't even think of priorities and just have to survive as best they can on the minimum they can.
Beyond that - many of us are somewhere in between "can only just manage to keep body and soul together literally" and "if we need or particularly want it then we can have it".
I'm the "somewhere in between" myself. So I can choose, for instance, between either running a car or eating in a way I agree with/having a social life.
So - I can't afford both. There's no point in my even thinking about whether to have a car or no - as I simply can't afford it. But I do find the money to eat "My way" and that means organic/free-range eggs/generally healthy and interesting". Maybe some people would use that money to run a car instead - but my choice is to use it to eat in a way that will help my health and I approve of it. I can cope with detractors - as long as I have some friends that like me and I have self-respect about myself.
That's how I think. I know some others think differently. I know some other people can't even afford to sit down and decide how they feel about this.0 -
Everything I eat is organic, even the agave that I sometimes use to give a little sweetness. It started in 1977 when we joined a suma wholefood cooperative in kendal. That was back in cranks and rose Elliots day. There have been skint times when I could not afford the likes of organic milk or organic meat but we had a few chickens for eggs and I grew vegetables. Everything I eat now is organic, luckily it is now easily available and I can afford it, I don`t bother with expensive holidays and otherwise live simply.
I am talking about 40 years of it and it has paid off. I have had sinning times and enjoyed fish n chips or a nice cake but not any more, no more second chances at my age. I feel well and have vitality and have recently started cycling, went on a 10.5 mile hilly and windy ride this morning and could have done more. However it is always each to their own and very much what people can afford and their priorities
I managed to finish bits off today and made two pizzas, left them in the oven a bit too long but I have one in the freezer and ate one, which very much satisfied my want of some crunchiness. Was nice too, topping of tomato puree, red onion, sliced asparagus (to use it up) and mozarella
Only one small meal left now, maybe a couple of crackers with a bit of goats cheese and a kiwi. No, changed my mind, crispy rice cereal with vanilla soya milk, yum. In half an hour I think
Its going to be a busy alloment day tomorrow so I`ll be glad of that pizza from the fridge and will probably also have the packet of miso and seaweed soup for another meal. Got to get back to soaking oats and dried fruit for breakfast, I like them like that, nice and creamy and it make me feel virtuous0 -

LOL ... I eventually bought a £40 sofa from a small/private ad + a neighbour donated a chair to me ... but when I moved in here I had a folding garden chair (£4) and a folding garden lounger (£20).0 -
prefer to buy stuff that does not mean some poor s0d has rotten wages / conditions just to knock 3p off my purchase and buy organic sometimes, and cheap horrible stuff sometimes, depends, I do not go out of my way to do make a choice, but will do without sometimes if I think it is "not right" which could range from local factory farmed through to organic from certain countries
Just wanted to say thanks and fantastic!0 -
I ate the 600+ grams of potato salad ... great .... but it was 600 grams from a 1.5Kg bag ... and one of two bags.
*sighs*
I've eaten way too much today .... including crisps and chocolates.
Toast/tomatoes/eggs/sausages; potato salad/scotch egg/tomatoes; a tomato sandwich; potato salad/sausages.
There's a theme there ... it's called "having to eat what you've got open because you need to eat it all before it goes off". Repetitive eating because any variation means opening something ELSE that'd also need using up.
Still got 3 hard boiled eggs though ...
I've lined up a pot noodle by the kettle that I bet I scoff later....0 -
I have been working on the allotment this morning and came back with a red meat craving, I will listen and have got a lamb burger out and defrosting, That plus 4 different veg and some instant gravy and mint sauce. A meal fit for a king, especially when followed by two pieces of slowly nibbled good dark chocolate
The sky looks very ominous, time to batten down the hatches soon. Used fleece on the allotment after watering. Its bone dry here but the swallows are backwhich is lovely
I am really looking forward to my crunchy pizza but will save it for 5ish as it will satisfy crunchy cravings
Making another soup tmorrow, I have broad beans in my freezer and need to finish them. Tomorrow as it will last three days0 -
I've managed to pull off another scoffathon
Breakfast: 2x toast + 1 cheese triangle.
Misc: Packet of crisps
Lunch: 4 individual egg custard tarts and 1 "chicken tikka slice" which is meat in puff pastry.
I noticed A1d1 were flogging bread rolls dated yesterday at 50% off.... I didn't partake.
I only went in for margarine/salad cream... came out with the slice, the egg custard tarts, coffee and cheese triangles "to stock up" ... and a Pyrex jug (which was annoying as I thought it was smaller than the ones I've already got but it's the same size.... never mind, it'll get used). You can never have too many Pyrex jugs0 -

Envy your allotment, not that I could handle one these days, just takes me back to when I had one, but in my case it was allotment then pub, not crunchy pizza
Yesterday did finish up as CBA and dinner just settled for the last baguette with cheese, tom & coleslaw filling, would have included cucumber but it had gone too slimy  even for me to contemplate scoffing it
Morrison's this morning, needed bread and ideas for dinner, I still had vouchers for bread & meals for one in hand, problem solved. Obviously Morrison's are monitoring my buying habits via the loyalty card I use, mixed feelings on that subject but we all have our price, and mine is 35p off a loaf and 35p off a cucumber and a fiver now and then from accumulated points
Thus three meals for one for £6.50, one English, one Indian, one Chinese, very international food this week
Plus noticed YS "The best slow cooked British beef brisket with beef dripping roast potatoes in a rich red wine & porcini mushroom sauce" now we all know with that description it can only be a big let down and fail, but being a [STRIKE]mug[/STRIKE] glass half full sort of bloke I bought that as well
The beef will go well with the bargain fresh veg that has been skulking in my fridge for the past week, and the week ahead seems promising now on food decision front
Yet another banana from the HUGE pile for breakfast, and it was boring but fine cheese / tom & cuc [bought a new one in Morrison's this morning] sandwichNumerus non sum0 -
I don't know why, but I seem to keep ending up having scrambled eggs on toast for breakfast at the moment. It's not like me to get hooked on something in this way, so today when I was having a mooch in Sainsburys I bought some english muffins and thought I could at least have the eggs on one of those in the morning to make a change! I have kept two out and frozen the rest to keep them fresh.
Lunch today was a tuna mayo sandwich, I did a cupboard audit yesterday and I seem to have quite a few tins of tuna, so may start to use it up in main meals such as pasta bake. I always find it a useful way of using up veg that is starting to look a bit past its best as well.
I didn't plan very well when I had the tuna for lunch because I have got a salmon fillet with a use by date of today that I have planned to have for dinner tonight, with either salad or veg, I haven't decided which yet.
I was really good in town today and managed to come home without any cakes or chocolate that I really don't need, pretty good going for me.
I hope that you are all having a good bank holiday.0 -

Once I've got muffins I also swap out a scrambled eggs moment for a poached egg moment. They're better on muffins as they're "a bitter fit", so look nicer and a bit different. Usually with beans..... tuna mayo sandwich.... quite a few tins of tuna
I find I tend to eat something, like it, buy some more, eat it, buy some more to "stock up" and immediately stop fancying it
That's why I've got about 6 cans of tuna.... I also lob it on top of baked spuds. A tuna/hard boiled egg mix is nice too.I didn't plan .... tuna for lunch because .... salmon fillet with a use by date of today that I have planned to have for dinner tonight
Buy something, then realise I'm "having similar things twice in one day". Not with salmon though - never, ever, bought salmon.I hope that you are all having a good bank holiday.
I had nothing to do, so did nothing. I've got a bit "twitchy" and popped out randomly within a 1 mile radius .... but that's it.
Even parking costs £3 each time you think "I'll stop here and see what's what".... so it's best to stay home until you actually NEED to buy things, then find shops with free parking0
