Well last night i had a portion of chilli left over from last nights evening meal. Hubby doesnt like rice so i made it like a lasagne but with a chilli base. Anyway, i put the leftovers in a sealed container and put it in the fridge. It looked so unappetizing looking at it through the pyrex dish but i forced myself to eat it for dinner as i hate waste.

Now it was a mild chilli that i made, 24 hours later sat in the fridge and warmed through to eat. It blew my head off!

I dont like eating leftovers. My mouth is still recovering.:(
Yep I've had the chilli heat "maturing" in fridge experience as well LOL :D

For me, eating beige is eating beige coloured, mainly carb high nutrient low food. So it's not unusual for my diet to be cereal or toast for breakfast, cheese sandwich (no salad) for lunch and pasta or pizza for tea.

My problem with the 'recommendations' of fruit and veg is that I much, much prefer fruit to veg. Plus it's hard to get through small amounts each day of a huge variety before it goes off.

Also the juice/smoothie only counting for a maximum of one. So the apple/spinach/kiwi smoothie I had earlier counts as one when if I'd eaten them whole it'd be three. I think I'm going to count it as three anyway...

I've been browsing the 10 a day thread since it started, someone on there said that a portion should be a handful, so obviously far more suited to individuals than the 80g.

Just back to dentists for a moment...food related I guess if you have bad teeth because you eat too much sweet stuff:p...Thanks for all the good wishes.

2 fillings done without an injection  I have very sensitive teeth but managed with the discomfort...I still left with a sore mouth and a much lighter wallet :(

ETA Welcome Ames we're a friendly, if rather odd, but supportive bunch so please call in again :D

I hope your mouth feels less sore soon.

Thanks for the welcome! I've been lurking for a week or so. In the past when I've ventured in to Old Style I've left feeling totally inadequate. Especially around batch cooking and freezing - I don't really like sloppy food, not enough to have dozens of portions of mince based 32 ingredient slow cooker masterpieces carefully labelled and organised in the freezer. Somebody said on this thread a few days ago that they feel the same way, which is what made me decide to post...
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

I try to think of a £1/day budget for eating - and most of the time I'm under that ... so then I occasionally splash out and spend £2 or so on something special like a pizza or a curry. I eat a cheap pub meal about 1-2x a year and get fed food (similar to my own type) about 10x a year.

I never buy anything I don't know I like and can't guarantee to eat it ALL. There's zero waste for me. I'd not dare try something unknown/new because if it was really nasty I'd still have to eat it.

The perpetual problem of of us oneskis is using stuff up so you are certainly not alone

Can't vouch for the validity of this but PHE seemed to have revised their guidance on homemade smotthies (it's also came up a few times on various newspaper comments) that provided not sieved homemade can count for more than one http://www.rosie-saunt.com/?p=2083 would make sense:)

I do do some batch cooking, it suits me but much less now I'm on my own. Mainly mash, soups and some casseroles and things like ragu which I know I'll use up over a period of time. It suits me as some days my health won't allow for proper cooking. I'm making lasagne for folk coming round this weekend and will happily make a big batch of the meat sauce so I can freeze some, but I have enough freezer space to stash it without feeling uner pressure to use it up quickly. ;)

I've always said "there are no points for presentation".

    Compare the following:
1] Make up mince/gravy, make mash, spoon onto plate.
2] Make up mince/gravy, make mash. Spoon into a dish and turn an oven on, top it with grated cheese and some sliced tomatoes, put it in the oven and stand and stare for 20 minutes while the top goes brown.

1] is good enough to eat, so why create extra work, wait longer and have more washing up?

    :)

I'm fond of 1 but love 2 so worth the effort for me, it's the crunchy bits on top that win out over the effort :)

I won't answer the door when the 10/10 'experts' come knocking and put a black cross on my door :p

Ooh good, I'll count smoothies as more than one. And not read further articles on the matter, since next week they won't count at all and the week after they'll cause cancer.

I keep thinking about making soup. Waitrose do nice sounding soup packs which seem a good place to start, but I don't know what you actually do with them - do you just stick them in a pan with a lid on for an hour or so, or do you have to keep stirring? I've never even seen it made, so don't have a clue.

Can you freeze mash then? I used to like it, but because of pain in my hands and wrists I haven't bothered in years. It seems a bit of a waste of time and effort on a good day to get one potato and mash it. Could I prepare potatoes in other ways and freeze them, too? I'd love to do roasties when I manage a joint, but again, the effort seems too much for just one.

Sorry for the questions, you don't have to answer!

1] is good enough, but would be perfect for me if the mash was mixed with grated cheese. That's the only benefit of 2] to my mind.

But I'm funny about mixing food anyway, even if I had 2] I'd split them back out on the plate and eat the mash and then the mince. I tend to eat things in a strict order - my ex once as a joke brought me a meal in three parts, something like mash then greens then meat. I didn't see it as a joke, it was perfect for me!
