caron I was just about to post about weighing fruit/veg etc.

My newly bought food scales arrived today so I weighed the banana I was about to eat...200 grams then similar for an apple!!!

I think they plucked the 80g out of thin air..pah to it all is all I can say...no more counting going on here. I'll eat as much or as little fruit and veg as I think right for me, as and when I want it...stick that in your pipe and smoke you supposed 'people who know best'!!

Bloody ridiculous if you ask me.
Absolutely, I can understand that it's "ball park" advice and useful to an extent to give a visual on how much or little of something you makes a "portion" but apart from that it's balderdash IMHO and no doubt putting pressure on parents whose kids may only eat a few different F&V never mind the cost. I'll stick with fact I really like veg and if in the mood enjoy fruit, like to eat a good range of stuff and the rest can take care of itself ;)
  • Well there is an online newspaper article at the moment about many of the maxims we are urged to live by - eg the former "5 a day" one and the "8 glasses of water a day" one, etc, etc arent actually based on solid scientific research (ie as we are all assuming).

I don't know if this is actually the case or no in the event. Don't know if anyone else does?

But I stick to my own idea of "Remember the before and after pictures - and weights - of people that have switched from a pretty standard (ie unhealthy) diet to one where they are trying to eat healthily and generally trying to have plenty of fruit and vegetables (such as generous helpings at both lunch and dinner)". Yep....I've read quite a few articles/books/etc by now that have those before & after pictures and the weights and picture 1 is of someone pasty/slightly ill looking/etc/etc and picture 2 is of someone attractive and healthy-looking.

Add my mental picture of the two polar opposite groups of young people I used to see in my home city. Group 1 - pale/pasty/unhealthy-looking and either rake thin or obese. Group 2 - slim figures/shiny hair/glowing skins. You can guess the respective backgrounds the two different groups came from or just stand and watch Group 2 walking into the university:cool: and Group 1 pushing the cheap prams around at rather a young age. Those two sets of mental pictures in my mind are what keep me personally eating my fruit/veg.

To be honest I eat F&V because I enjoy them:D But agree when my kids were wee like many they were selective about the veg they would eat, I just went with flow topping up with fruit and working on the maxim that I'd rather they ate a few different veggies happily. Meals were in the main cooked from scratch and junk limited but I was fortunate that I could afford it. There was an interesting study a few years back about food choices in poor households and the bottom line was that many couldn't afford to buy food that their kids might not eat so stuck with stuff they knew they would. Chuck in fuel poverty, poor housing and limited storage/ cooking kit etc. and you can see how it can become really hard for some parents. Of course some will go for the easy option and don't really care but most are trying to do their best by their kids. It's a hard one.....

Poor brave you glad you survived.:D I have poor back teeth due to a genetic problem meaning most of my second back molars didn't grow. My dad and brother are the same as is my elder son. I just about thumped a hygenist a number of years ago when she said in a very uppity way that my son must have had too many fizzy drinks thinking he must have had them extracted. Needless to say a swift letter of complaint to the practice manager was sent.......

This is quite a decent article on the background to this https://www.thehealthcloud.co.uk/origins-of-5-a-day/
Interesting it mentions weight consumed as well as portions

Cooked a full meal tonight, lamb chop, mash, carrots and gravy. Forgot the mint jelly. Have had an apple and an orange as well. Much prefer fruit to veg which according to these articles is the wrong way round.

Sounds lovely and no doubt in x weeks time we'll be urged to eat more fruit in place of some of the less nutrient dense veggies. Another of my "fail to see the logic" is that potentially 80g of insiped iceberg lettuce is better for you than an apple or an orange.......

I absolutely agree with you caron.

I think these advisory notes on eating 10/10 are actually aimed at those who couldn't care less and just eat junk food on a daily basis because they can, it's easier and think 'F&V are horrible'. The ones who really couldn't care less if they are fat and unhealthy.

Many like us enjoy F&V and eat a healthy range every week...but I for one get irked by this preaching to the converted and causing undue concern to those that do their best to eat well within their financial means.

Well last night i had a portion of chilli left over from last nights evening meal. Hubby doesnt like rice so i made it like a lasagne but with a chilli base. Anyway, i put the leftovers in a sealed container and put it in the fridge. It looked so unappetizing looking at it through the pyrex dish but i forced myself to eat it for dinner as i hate waste.

Now it was a mild chilli that i made, 24 hours later sat in the fridge and warmed through to eat. It blew my head off!

I dont like eating leftovers. My mouth is still recovering.:(
