I may not have known exactly what the specific NOx values were supposed to be but I chose the car based on economy and environmental factors taken as a whole. The MPG, the road tax etc were key factors in me moving from petrol to my first diesel.

Regardless of whether I was savvy enough to know specifically what NOx was at the point of sale, VW market these cars as environmentally friendly (I have the bluemotion engine, and I purchased this over other engines for its 'green' credentials) and have misled consumers. I wanted to sell my car this year and it has definitely been impacted by this, I couldn't sell privately or to a non VW dealer as nobody wanted to take it until the fix had been confirmed, I could have possibly part exchanged at a VW dealer but I don't want another one as aside from this issue it has already been nothing but trouble with rubbish service! (funnily enough on another emmissions based issue) If I get it fixed there have been varying reports of reduced performance so I lose out there too.

Since VW has had to pay out compensation in other regions, why shouldn't we want the same treatment as their customers? They have abused their position as a trusted manufacturer and we have suffered losses and inconveniences (to varying degrees, pretty difficult to quantify to be fair) as a result.

I've never read so much bull as this.

You had no idea what the NOx value was, you have no idea what it will be after the fix. You don't even know what NOx does to the environment...

You've found a way to try and make a bit of money and you're jumping on it.

The device was designed to beat the emissions test in the USA, hence why USA got compensation. AFAIK, the NOx values weren't in breach of EU regulations, so you get nothing.

There is no guarantee for future value of a second hand car. Get a grip and move on with your life.

Interesting that Slater and Gordon single out damage to the environment as a secondary reason for the claim. Logically this should lead to compo for all of us, not just VW diesel owners ....we've all been breathing the same NOxious fumes.

There is a facebook group giving details of many people who have had the 'fix' and now having big , and costly , problems with their car.

We bought our car specifically to be able to tow our trailer. Loss of power after the fix may mean the car is no longer fit for the purpose.

No, there isn't a guarantee of future value. But I do know it's made it difficult to sell the car this year which wouldn't have been the case had this 'fix' not been required, at least 3 places I took it to noted the fact that it had been recalled as a reason for not wanting to take it in part exchange. If I do get the fix then there have been plenty of reports of drop in performance. Why should I be ok with that?
  • Lack of keen buyers isn't just about this issue, DSG gearbox reliability and cost to fix, various engines with questionable reliability, electric parking brake maladies, EGR valves which some dealers wheedle four figure sums out of their customers to replace, comparatively short makers warranty, reluctance for goodwill after warranty, arrogant dealerships, all this and far more is available for all to see on the net, how much is exaggerated is open to debate.
There are many reasons people are not interested in used VW group cars, the present issue just another nail in the coffin.

Loving all the hand ringing being done about how people only bought their VW because of its environmental impact "think of the children", therefore VW needs to be punished - by putting cash into THEIR pockets!

In all the years i sold cars, not once ever did anyone tell me they were buying a specific car because of its environmental impact - great fuel economy, cheap road tax, residuals, etc, - yes all the time, but never because of its impact on the environment. Now all these "tree huggers" are coming out of the woodwork saying they were thinking of the environment when they bought a brand new £25K oil burner.

If you can see the com-pen-say-shun at least be honest enough to say you want to jump on the cultural bandwagon - lets not pretend its for the children, or for the trees, or for the little bunny rabbits or whatever.

Well I certainly wouldn't be getting another, Thought I was buying from a reputable brand 4 years ago but have lost all confidence and trust in them and the car, hence wanting rid of it!

Lets put it this way. If you had one of these cars - with all the future uncertainties what would you do (assuming you don't actually have one of the cars that is)?

Would you not want to err on the side of caution and get something out of VW? None of us know in a few years what ongoing issues might be caused by the modifications (although problems are being reported) so - with the fact that time is a factor - it seems sensible to get your fair/unfair share of any windfall.

And.... while many of us may not be aware of the NOx values or other fine points we do know that given the chance all dealers will try to use this as a reason to drive down their trade-in offers. That's almost certainly going to be a fact. I see any windfall as compensation not least for that fact alone.

    that's my personal view.

There isn't mutual exclusivity between wanting to purchase something that is of benefit to yourself whilst also being considerate towards the environment. Yes, I wanted a car that was good on fuel consumption and the other things you mention, but environmental impact was also a big factor, as it is with many choices I make in my day to day life.

Clearly compensation would be for my own benefit but that doesn't detract from why I made my purchasing decisions in the first place.

And as far as many were concerned that was determined with regards the CO2 figures, I bet nobody was concerned, or even knew, about the impact of other pollutants that come from diesel cars. They just saw the low CO2 figures, or rather the low or free VED, and thought "yay I feel good now I'm no longer contributing to global warming".

I've absolutely no problem about owners trying to screw as much money out of VW they can think they can get away with but please don't insult our intelligence by pretending why you're doing it.
