DavidP24 - you 'need' to lookup the meaning of the word 'need'. You gave the impression that Windows 7 simply doesn't run on a computer with under 2GB RAM. It happily runs on 1GB. Not much will run ON IT at 1GB, and multitasking won't be fun, but the OS did not change, and there was no official required minimum spec 'upgrade' from 2GB to 4GB.

Regardless of what you think, swapping a HDD out for an SSD will give a massive performance boost
It's pointless swapping out the hard drive for an SSD until the OP tells us the spec of his machine. Not all SATA interfaces operate at 6GB/s, so there is zero guarantee of a "massive performance boost".

The OP just needs to scan for malware .. My spider senses tell me that will solve his immediate issue.
Seen it time and time again.

    SSD is just an afterthought

    Good Morning Folks

I have a desktop which is nearly 7 years old and works quite slow.

How can I improve this? There is a lot of 'rubbish' that I have managed to accumulate over the years and stored on the desktop. How can I get rid of that?

I have heard of a product called ccleaner? Has anybody used it before? Is it any good?

    Thanks

I normally do not engage in futile tech piiiissssing contests but when you talk about an Atom270 CPU running a cut down tablet version and try to suggest that it running in 1.5gb of ram is somehow relevant to the OP's machine or his problem I have to show you up for making a daft irrelevant comment because of aannal retentive syndrome.

Prey tell me...do you think that you have managed to do that?

When did Windows 7 Starter become a 'Tablet version'? I don't know of even a single Tablet running Windows 7 Starter.

I also ran Windows 7 Ultimate with 2GB of RAM on my Medion PC for many years, until I upgraded to the Optiplex 780.

Your statement was/is just rubbish and your posting of the graphics of my CPU only confirmed it.
That my cr*p CPU runs Windows 7 Starter 32 bit on 1.5GB of RAM, smoothly and efficiently.
Also running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit on another Netbook with an Atom N455 and 2GB of RAM..

Now if you had written that Windows 7 64 bit needs 4GB of RAM, none one would have argued.
Clearly you have a penchant for placing your foot in your mouth. Don't let me stop you.

We have no idea what the OP is running at this stage. Wind yer neck in, eh? ;)

Since a seven-year-old PC is worth about £20, if that, just write it off and buy a more recent second hand one.

Adding an SSD to your old desktop - even if it will work - is a bit like putting a Ferrari engine into a Morris Minor: a interesting exercise in principle, but not likely to have a useful outcome.

Erm...I bought an Optiplex 780 MT with 4GB of RAM (which just happens to be seven years old) for £40 and stuck a 120GB SSD within as the boot drive costing £25.
The supplied HDD is used for storage. Moved an equally old graphics card over from and even older machine.
    Very happy with the performance.

So it really depends on the machine. But even if they bought another second hand machine, as SSD would still be a recommendation. Especially a clean install to SSD.

But for now, baby steps. :)

I'm not disputing SSD vs HDD speeds, just that we don't have the OP's hardware specs.

I was given an old Acer netbook and an OCZ SSD to sort out by a friend a few years back as they'd heard fitting one would speed up their system. Except the SATA interface was part of an IDE adapter so the drive would only operate at PATA/133 speeds. They wanted it put in anyway, and it made virtually no difference to the speed of the machine.
