I put an SSD in an 8 year old Dell and it made a huge difference. The SSD is used for the OS and applications with the original hard disc used for data only.

It really is a delight to use.

I'd try a clean install of the OS first though without changing anything.

You probably have a whole load of updates, bloatware and other kwap slowing down your system.

You do not list your spec so limits the hardware advice, but if it is using Win7 it is worth noting that it needs at least 4gb now, it used to need two.

Ccleaner is a good program, you will fine with free version, before you use it go create a new user (stamdard user not admin), log in as that user and see if it is any faster.

It will not stop the bloatware apps that you have installed but it will indicate if your profile is over bloated.

I suggest you follow the instructions I gave here to help speed up PC, check for malware and adware as well as pups.

You do know that statement is nonsense...don't you?

The first (and free) thing to do is clean all the malware and pups that you undoubtedly have on your machine by your own admission ..

First , run malwarebytes from here :-
    https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/thankyou/
(Decline the option for a free trial of the pro version)

Next , run ADW cleaner from here to tidy up ..
    https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/

If still slow after this, you might want to freshly install the operating system
Let us know if you get to this point and need any help

Ignore the rubbish above about Win7 needing 4GB
Also, purchasing an SSD is the single best thing you can do for a speed increase on your computer.

Since a seven-year-old PC is worth about £20, if that, just write it off and buy a more recent second hand one.

Adding an SSD to your old desktop - even if it will work - is a bit like putting a Ferrari engine into a Morris Minor: a interesting exercise in principle, but not likely to have a useful outcome.

I am confident that if the OP posts his task manager performance tab when running some apps and experiencing the performance issue it will show the shortage of ram is the problem.
Conversely, i am confident that a maxed out CPU will be causing the problem due to many pups and malware.OP, please clarify.
I am responsible for MANY machines that are running W7 and have 2GB ram installed, and they are working fine

Adding an SSD without dealing which what is actually causing the probem is BAD ADVICE, the problem will remain, it will still be short of ram, sure it might swap a bit quicker but it does not solve the problem.
Regardless of what you think, swapping a HDD out for an SSD will give a massive performance boost

Thanks for copying my original advice on this forum from http://!!!!!!/cleanlap
I wouldnt dream of cliking on your shortened link and i dont need to copy anybodys advice from anywhere thanks. I have my own advice to offer.

The advice i offered is free and easy for the end user to perform and would be the first port of call for anybody experiencing poor performance on their machine

    DavidP24 wrote: »
that was not the OP's request

    yes it was

BTW this is an apostrophe ‘ feel free to use it and any other grammar they teach at school

Well it has to be taken in context, the OP says his system was slow, but he ALSO says WHAT he things the problem might be.

DavidP24 your post was very long and most of it was pointless.
Im not going to start talking about qualifications/experience even if you feel the need to try to belittle me.

You talk about engineering approaches, so you must surely agree that the best way to approach a problem is to start with the easiest/cheapest (free)/ and most likely solution to the problem.

In this case, the easiest, free and most likely solution to the problem is to scan for malware as i outlined in my short and to the point post.

I also tagged on the end that an SSD would give a massive speed boost , which it will. But i didnt indicate this as a solution to the problem.

Please re-read if you are unsure about this.

As for my punctuation/spelling - I am dyslexic . I try my best and apologise for any mistakes i made.
This doesnt however take away from my technical expertise.

The solution you offered may well be the answer - But it would be totally stupid to even entertain this without first scanning for malware.
