    Never skimp on tyres.

I either go for Uniroyal or Pirelli.

I am economical with my money, but where safety is a concern, is it really worth saving £100?

Yes, but paying an extra £100 to pay for Pirelli's marketing budget isn't going to make you any safer. I buy tyres based on ratings and reviews as the choice will often depend on the type of driving you do. Big name brands aren't automatically better, they just spend more on marketing. They may spend more on R&D as well, but it's not guaranteed.

If you're comparing to mid-range, then that might be debatable.

If you're comparing to the Ali-Baba-Containerload-no-names, then it's definitely not true.

    <crystal ball> Pirelli P6000s?
Heh, mine came with those on. They all had slow leaks, so even though they were only half-worn (corroded rim surfaces), I renewed them and had the rims wire-brushed. I didn't like them at all. I replaced them with Goodyears - like night and day. I can get the Goodyears to break away in the dry, but it's not easy.

Michelin Energy. They were on the car when we bought it new and lasted 30000 miles+. Tried buying them from UK based companies but they were £90 each. I bought them for £60 each delivered from a German website. Fitted FOC by Charles Warner Lincoln as they were replacing the alloys (incidentally FOC BTW) on the chav wagon at the same time.

If I could not get them that cheaply I would normally use Nexen as they have been brilliant in the past and their warranty is superb.

SWMBO Audi TT (2016) on the other hand is running 20" Continentals. That's going to be expensive....

Would you ever feel the need to have your tyres nitrogen filled. What is the cost and at what benefit?
I came into this world with nothing and I'm gonna leave with nothing.

Unless your name is Lewis Hamilton, none whatsoever.

I replaced my worn down Michelins with cheap Chinese tyres they seemed fine until I had to do an emergency stop. The noise changed but the car did not slow much so emergency steering had to save the day.
Back in the day Dunlop SP sports were superb but I used to get through them in 10k.

It's what tyres were designed for. Pure nitrogen is more stable at varying temperatures, so when your tyre pressure needs to be accurate to within a tiny margin (such as when racing) it is helpful. For the rest of us, it is a waste of money. When you fill the tyre you will be diluting it with fresh air anyway, unless you find somewhere that will sell you pure nitrogen at the roadside.

It's a fad, designed to appeal to the boy racer with more money than sense.
