Do you go for a budget tyre or one of the brand name tyres? Looking to buy some tyres. I have a 2.2 diesel sport. I don't rag it and don't do that many miles per year.
I came into this world with nothing and I'm gonna leave with nothing.

Ignore the cheap rubbish. It's a false economy. Remember - the time you realise that you DO need decent grip is when some numpty pulls or steps out in front of you, and you slam the anchors on hard. Will you stop in time?

What size tyres do you need?

I go for both; For the last few years i have been buying Jinyu tyres which are a budget brand, but are very good for the price.

They cost me £50-60 fitted each even for low profile 19" tyres. Every one has lasted over 20,000 miles on front wheel drive cars (I also swap them front to back after roughly 10,000 miles). They also have decent handling even in the wet and when towing.

So one of those sizes that's got a lot of very cheap rubbish, but all the stuff worth buying is fairly steep.

Out of that lot, the cheapest I'd be going near is the £80 Avons or £85 Uniroyals.

Kumho and Falken aren't too bad and I think Coopers are pretty good but I agree with the jist of what you are saying

Have a look on tyreleader.co.uk, you'll get a very good choice of tyres with EU economy, wet grip and noise ratings for most of them. They're supply only, so you either ask your preferred fitter to price match, or get him to fit them for you. My local man only charges £10 per wheel to fit/balance, that includes disposing of the removed tyre!

Personally, I have 17" Goodyear Eagle Asymmetrics on the MB S204 and love them, could not get 16" for my 968 so instead got Goodyear Efficientgrip which are just as good.

I wouldn't get hung up on the ratings - they're self-certified and, while they can probably be trusted for most brands, I doubt they're worth the paper they're printed on for some of the Ali-Baba-by-the-container pick-your-own-brand-name cheapies.

The Jinyu YU61 tyres which i have on one my car's are only £42.60 each on that page. You shouldn't assume a tyre is bad just because it is cheap!.
