what tyres do you buy?

I fit what my mechanic recommends - and his recommendations tend to be the tyres he's running based on tread pattern, experience & word of mouth.
Before then, I fitted Costco Michelins religiously and stayed out of ditches just fine but my wallet took a mild caning.0 -
How many containers-full would you like? The Jinyu YU61 tyres which i have on one my car's are only £42.60 each on that page. You shouldn't assume a tyre is bad just because it is cheap!.

The fact that their main UK retailer is Asda should tell you a lot.0 -
I tend to avoid the "top" brands as I've found them to be very soft and wear down very quickly. Hankook seem to be a good compromise between cost, performance and wear rate. Not sure I'd bother with the budget brands though.0

Budgets all the way.
Even the worst (UK legal) budgets out there are as good or better than the best was when my car was new 23 years ago and I haven't fallen off the road on any corners or failed to stop in time yet.0 -
That's so far from being true that it's not even funny.Joe_Horner wrote: »Even the worst (UK legal) budgets out there are as good or better than the best was when my car was new 23 years ago...
There's probably many far, FAR worse tyres on the market now than the worst you could get in 1994.0 -
I'm going for cheap ditchfinders next time. (pretty soon by how fast these rubbish continentals wear out)
If they really do make me stop 50m later, and I write the car off I reckon I'll get a lot more than I would selling it privately, even after the excess has been taken out.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

I have just purchased a car with the same 245 45 18 size andybez38
I am looking for a winter tyre and have been a bit surprised that in general the cost for this size is very high. I am on a very tight budget but am not sure about skimping on tyres!
tyreleader, camskil, mytyres and blackcircles seem to give a pretty comprehensive overview of whats out there.0 -
I'd be surprised if your car couldn't go down a size in terms of recommended OEM wheels. It may be worth buying a spare set of 17" wheels and a set of winter tyres to match. May actually work out cheaper than a full set of 245/45 18 tyres.groundskeeperwilly wrote: »I have just purchased a car with the same 245 45 18 size andybez38

Michelin Enerygy via Costco.
Always suited as I was ,until recently, doing about 25,000 miles per year. This was mainly on motorways at crusing speed of about 70mph.0
