New Router

Hi, hoping you can all help me. We have broadband, due to location (we are quite far away from the exchange) our speed is 0.5 mbs on average getting up to 1.5 mbs on a really good day. I have been told that the router that comes free are not particularly great. I was hoping that a bought one might give us better speeds. I have had a look on Amazon but I wasn't sure what one was best.

Does anyone have any recommendations of router? Or anything else I can do to improve speed?

The router just routes - it should not have any effect on speed - if the free one serves its purpose I would stick with it.
  • Aww. I was hoping there was a solution. Only one of us can go on the internet at once and we can't watch videos.

If there is no prospect of fibre then what is your 3g/4g reception like?
  • I have about 2 bars on 4g. We do have fibre, our exchange almost 2 miles away which is the main problem, That's what I was told by the call centre anyway.

Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand
  • The speeds you quote sound like ADSL on a long line, though at 2 miles I would expect it to be a bit faster than that. FTTC (aka "fibre") should always be faster and is dependent on how far you are from the green cabinet that your line goes to, not the exchange.

plug the router into the test socket, login to the router as you have done previously, and check the speeds. eg

Connection Speed 378 kbps 413 kbps
Line Attenuation 60 db 41 db
Noise Margin 14 db 16 db

(you don't have to use an ethernet cable for this)

then see what everyone else in your area gets

I would say fibre is about 10 pounds a month more than regular broadband as a ball park upgrade sum - i certainly pay exactly 10 pounds per month for my fibre upgrade but some isps might charge less
  • Thanks done that. An improvement on download now

    2.0 d/l
    .05 u/l

    They were both .05 earlier
