Love an automatic, both of ours are. If I have to drive the kids cars (manual) I sit there looking blank for a while.

@lucielle I always say it's like driving a bumper car 😂  MrM has a manual which I can drive but it's too much clutch work that does me in.

  • I've literally never driven an automatic. I know the theory, but I'd most definitely need someone to go through the practical side with me if I ever had to!

I was very anti them until I got my first one and was still a bit meh about it.  The salesman said you'll never go back to a manual, I did give him a withering look.  He was right though.

@EssexHebridean it's literally start and stop. They're excellent for hill starts too as don't roll back, no finding the biting point.

  • The thing is, when you're used to driving a car with a clutch hill starts/clutch use are just (pun incoming!) automatic aren't they - I don't even think about it any more. I get the advantage of them for people who for whatever reason struggle with the use of a clutch, but I don't think it's for me until I'm forced that way once we're all electric.  My Mum had one briefly because she thought as she got older it might be a better bet - she actually welcomed it getting written off in the end because it gave her an excuse to replace with a manual again!

Got to admit apart from occasion crutch foot I do enjoy the manual aspect of driving. I am looking forward to the day when we can buy an electric car though as new tech excites us and NM talking about her car being like a bumper car just gives me more to be excited about.

It's a bit like parallel parking. Do it enough and it's second nature. I only went automatic because of the pain I'd suffer in my toes. No more high heels either. Now that is something I miss.
