I also used several bank apps last week to complete the few manual transfers in my 'monthly shuffle' as I'm currently in Hong Kong:hello::beer:

badger09 makes a very good point - if I was abroad on my hotel wifi or an internet caf! no way would I log onto my bank using a web browser! Not sure |I would even risk accessing my email account on a browser. However, I would have no problems connecting my phone to wifi (even unsecured wifi) and using the banking app (and email app eg gmail or outlook) on my phone as everything is encrypted over the link.

Most bank apps won't run when root is detected.

Is that from experience or is it speculation? In fact I have an Elephone P9000 on which i have apps from Lloyds Bank, Natwest and MBNA but Android Pay will not even download to it.
Hi there, Anthony. Unfortunately, the Elephone P9000 is running test-keys that were not registered with Android's Compatibility Test Suite. Until the manufacturer resolves this, all users on Elephone P9000 devices will be unable to use Android Pay. Please feel free to contact the manufacturer to ask about their plans for enabling you to get setup.

As far as I know Elephone have not done anything at all to resolve the above which to me means there is something suspicious.

In my own personal experience, although banks and other financial services say they don't allow their apps to be installed on insecure phones they don't actually test which phones their apps are being installed on.

Have you actually rooted your phone or are you just assuming it is rooted due to reports online, have you tested to see if it is rooted?.

I have had a rooted Android device so I know the Halifax app checks for roots and I think I tried a Barclays app aswell which didn't work. But there are ways around this to get them to work, but obviously if their account is compromised it's their own fault.

Nope. I was given it for free by a relative who bought it specifically for Android Pay which according to reviews should work but doesn't due to Google's security measures. That speaks for itself.

  • It's fine as long as you use your bank's ap and install security software such as Avast on your phone.

An interesting thread, particularly after Joe's question. I've been wondering whether to install my banks' apps rather than use the brower.

I only access my accounts when at home or at DS' place, as I am now. I've been a little concerned that Santander and Nationwide icons appear on favourites as a thief would know where I bank.

I think I'd better install the apps when I get home.
