In mine (which is just a plastic tub on the shelf in the tiny washing liquid cupboard) I always have a spare of -

    Hand soap (bar and pump)
    Shower gel
    Bubble bath
    Shampoo and Conditioner
    Toothpaste
    Ear cotton bud things!
Box of the best tissues (Kleenex Ultra Soft) bought when on offer (these have now moved over to my medicine shelf cupboard!)

I feel a bit twitchy when I've taken the spare and haven't yet had a chance to replace it (its usually only things bought on special offer) haha!

In my kitchen drawer I've got a small cheap screwdriver kit - one handle and various size heads that slot in. It's surprising how often something needs tightening up. The tiniest head is just right for the screw holding The arm of my sunglasses.

I think it's a great idea to give your friend the hamper. He can store it anywhere (under the bed ).

I'd add a few sticking plasters of different sizes and a small tube of Savlon. Maybe a couple Lemsips in case he wakes up with a cold.

There are small things that would not take up space but would be useful.
Eg book of stamps, set of allen keys (for putting furniture together), batteries and so on

Totally agree about the flat storage issue, I love my flat but am stumped at where to store things.

I LOVE my IKEA toolbox: I have one at work, and if I can't fix whatever it is with the tools in that, I probably shouldn't be trying to fix whatever it is ...

Yes, it's worth having a smaller multi-headed screwdriver, the one in the IKEA toolbox would be too big to fix your glasses!

Pack of 3amp fuses. Don't bother with a multipack, I have never had to change a 5 or 13 amp fuse in my life. But I'm always scrabbling around in my kitchen drawer for a 3 amp fuse.

One each of Phillips and flat-head screwdrivers. Useful not just for screws but for chipping ice from the freezer, levering open stuck doors or windows and for opening wine bottles in an emergency.

Corkscrew. For opening wine bottles in an emergency.

Handwash, a torch and a lighter.

I would never ever use UHT milk so wouldn't include that.
