    How many is enough?

It's private land owned by them and they can do what they want with regards to spaces.

Most council run carparks tend to only have a handful of spaces, are you going to take two up in those if they are full! Good luck fighting the ticket.

I agree with you, council car parks are useless. So when in town I refuse to use them and instead park on double yellows for up to three hours.

Our Tesco has about 40 disabled access bays, but they are never full because they are in two rows going uphill from the shop, meaning that regular bays are actually easier to reach than about half the special ones.

The mother and child bays are down the side of the store, on the level and nearer than any other bays. (not very logical )

And this sums up why we blue badge users get so much abuse and why people get fed up with the system.

    The me me entitled attitude.

The law allows it. Given the choice of not being able to open the car doors by more than 8", or finding that somebody has put a dent in my car door, I have no hesitation in doing what the law allows.

I can imagine you finding a parking space and as you open the door out comes the ruler to make sure you have got the minimum 8 inches and if not will go and double park.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

There is no need for a ruler. You only have to look at any 'normal' parking bay to realise that trying to get a scooter out of the car needs more space than is allowed for in that parking bay - hence why they have wider disabled bays.
The scooter when dismantled will still not fit in the boot space, hence why it has to go on the rear seat - it is not a hatchback but a saloon car that is fairly low.

This is exactly the argument as to why PIP, or at least, motability, should be mean tested. If you can afford all those extra, why should you be entitled to a nice car from the tax payers? Why shouldn't the money go to those disabled people who can't afford to pay for their basic needs because PIP doesn't cover what their needs cost?
It really gets to me that they are people in pain who could benefit from a specialist bed etc... but can't afford it because PIP can't cover it, or some communication devices that would mean they could actually communicate with the outside world, and then we have people who moan because they can't get their big fancy car even though they could afford a regular car...

First I don,t see why a disabled person cannot have a little bit of 'luxury' such as a sunroof especially if they are in effect paying for it themselves by an increased initial payment or a bigger slice of their Mobility allowance being used.

It is the fault of the PIP assessment that those in need of a specialist bed or communications device cannot get the cost covered by PIP. You should lobby for more accurate PIP assessments and that very wealthy taxpayers do not avoid or evade their taxes rather than, in my view rather churlishly, pick on those who have been unlucky enough to suffer from ill health or disability because they can have a sunroof on their motability car.

Those that object to Motability leasing deals are better than those leasing deals available to the general public should think themselves lucky that thy do not suffer disability or ill health.

Some months ago I did a comparison of leasing deals and motability and found that Motability was the more expensive or broadly similar even when servicing, repairs (very unlikely in a car less than 3 years old) and insurance was taken into account. In fact what they were complaining about was mostly an illusion. For the disabled a car can be a necessity not just a convenience.
Do not be fooled into believing that this society cannot be made fairer because hard work isn't necessarily all it takes.

  • They have to draw a line somewhere. To lease a car for less than £230 a month which includes insurance, servicing and maintainence is a fantastic deal - even when you include an advanced payment for the more expensive vehicles it's still something which non DLA/PIP recipients would struggle to find on the open market. Moreover, even adaptions like hand controls are available free of charge.
if i had known then what i know now

I would dispute the words fantastic and struggle. There are plenty of leasing deals of less than £175 a month and there is usually an option of a maintenance package of less than £30 a month.

    http://www.whatcar.com/car-leasing/car-leasing-guide/maintenance-packages.php

An example chosen at random using the What Car search with a Canterbury post code:- for a Ford Fiesta Hatchback 1.0 EcoBoost 125 ST-Line Navigation 5dr there are deals typically of £500 down payment and 35 payments of less than £170 a month.

So including a maintenance contract that would be less than £200 a month plus insurance. Insurance would depend on your no claims bonus.

Yes Motability is less complicated to arrange than those leasing deals that are available to the able bodied but the financial advantage of using Motability for the Fiesta is not that great ( and with some cars not at all) and the able bodied do have the bonus of good health and no disability.
