I received a letter from Volkswagen requesting that I bring my 2009 Golf TDI to a local dealerships for an "emissions service".

I'm well aware of the outcry re VW emissions in the last couple of years, but my question is this....... is there any benefit to myself, if I take my car in for this "service", or is just so VW can tick a box?

I don't really want to have to waste my time taking the car in, if it's for their benefit only.

Any advice / opinions welcome.

Of course they'll be no benefit to you, you car will carry on as normal. VW are only doing this because they have to. Up to to you really but not doing it might have an affect on it's resale.

Thanks Neil - And I've just noticed a similar thread further down :)

I don't intend on reselling this car, I had to put a new DSG unit in it a few months ago which cost a FORTUNE, so will be driving it until it or I dies, whatever comes first!

Yes, the resale value might go up. That's if the stories of the 'fixes' adversely affecting the performance of vehicles and making them more prone to developing other faults are indeed true.

Since virtually every "update" I've allowed on my iphone has made it slower, and less functional, I wouldn't be jumping to get this done, as others have said, let a few thousand other people do the beta-testing first.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Does anyone know who done the independant testing that is mentioned in the letter and where the results can be seen?

I've asked my local dealer and emailed VW but the dealer said to contact VW and I haven't heard back from VW

I don't want to get the fix done until I can see proof that the performance or economy won't change

If they will be making it more efficient, then surely that means it will take a knock on the performance side?
  • I was told by VW Harrogate that if I opt out. The DVLA are writting a letter to state that it "NEEDS" to be done asap.

NOx particulate emissions harm people in cities. Nothing to do with penguins.
