I used to find that a written "to do" list was a great motivator - there's nothing quite like being able to tick things off a list to make it look like you're actually making progress at something. And once it looks messy because of all the crossed-out jobs, write yourself a new one. You'll soon get fed up of writing the same put-off jobs on it, so that'll motivate you to not leave certain things aside.

Another thing is to remind yourself that it's the writing that pays for the other stuff - so while you're thinking of doing chores or whatever, remember that in order to pay household bills and so on, the work must come first.

The shared working space sounds like a decent idea, especially if you can try it out for a few months without having to sign a long contract. In a way it would instil a work ethic perhaps - you could go there in the morning, and pressure yourself to get through the writing work because you've got a mountain of chores to do when you get home. But, like a "normal" (for want of a better word) job you can't just down tools and go and do them as easily as you could if you were at home. It might also introduce you to other people who might have other ideas or opportunities for you to earn more.
  • Have you tried using your phone as a "dictaphone" so instead of tpying you simply talk and the phone types it for you? You could use this to make current non-productive time productive, ie when driving (just make sure you are legal and safe ie hands-free etc).

Also it will make you more productive as most people can talk quicker than they can type!

    Thanks.

But if I knew the answers I'd be doing them already?

I mean, I know I need to work more, but I don't know how to make myself do the work.

Just to clarify, the £300 would be an extra outgoing on top of my current life costs.

But I did just check again and its actually closer to £220 plus VAT.

Really? I know that in order to lose weight I must eat less food (particularly rice/pasta), drink less beer and go to the gym more or walk to work more.

Yet does it happen? Nooooo. :rotfl:

You know what you need to do, but you are looking for confirmation from someone I suspect.

2,000 words a day isnt that many. Break it down.

You surely do not have chores that take up all morning, good lord. What are you doing, dusting every nook and cranny? Lunch is 5 minutes with a soup, and its not like you need to take an hour for a "break".

Hiring out a workplace seems unwise to me, it will raise your required output and from what I can gather there is no guarantees it would actually help. Get yourself sorted at home first.

@trailingspouse thanks, I think that is what I need to do. Or at least have another go at being more disciplined, rather than trying to change things up for the sake of it, and spend £2XX a month in the process!

Thanks to everyone else for the other replies.

I will try and be more strict with myself at home.

I've started writing down exactly how many words I need to write per day to hit my target earnings for the day, and that is helping a bit, having it right in front of me!

I now have the piece of paper in front of me when I work, that spells it all out so instead of thinking I need to earn £3,XXX this month, which is quite daunting, I'm now thinking, I need to write 1,XXX words today.

If you want to eat an elephant you have to do it one bite at a time, or something like that!

My local library is pretty small and cramped and is not really conducive to work but I've seen some great ones around the country.

I think I will try and tough it out for the next few months at home.

If I've not made any progress, then I will reconsider paying for somewhere to work from.

    Thanks!

I love tattoo and decided to connect my life with them professionally. I spent money on courses and now I work as a master. I am happy that I decided on this.

    And on this bombshell......

£3k+ is a massive step up from previously?! Do not forget to register that amount for tax as it is well over the threshold.

  • Hi,
I know this won't help you much but I was just wondering what it is you do, as I am looking for something that is home based due to me being a carer for my mum.
    thanks

I think you might need to make it clearer who you are asking that question of.

But in general, have a browse through this section of the forum for various home-working ideas. There are many options, and a lot of it will depend on what your specific skills are, how many hours you can put in, and so on. Also be aware that very few people will be specific about *exactly* what they are doing, for obvious reasons.

And ignore PM's from people " touting" their home selling schemes telling you how wonderful it is.

It will be along the lines of " I fit it round my lifestyle , it's only £49 for a starter pack , it's changed my life"

Most will be selling to friends and neighbours , once they get fed up , no income

I earn £2-3000 a month from my online job. After reading this thread, I'd definitely be interested in making more. For a newbie whos never done any of the things mentioned above what would I be best starting with?
