  • It's hard when people have this view of you that isn't true. I am not a shouty parent either. When DD was younger, it was so hard as nothing really worked with her, but now I can reason and talk to her calmly and get what I need her to understand out of it without the big shouting match and sometimes even without tears.
I can't suggest anything as nothing worked with DD but time and patience and when you're tired and working, it is hard to find that. Sometimes I would be in bed for 6pm I was that exhausted so really do feel your pain. I only had one to deal with as well.
Meal planning is great, but when it gets thrown off, it can also be a pain. I hope you do find the right balance between meals and sorting yourself out.

Remember to be kind to yourself!  You`re both doing shifts and have two young children...wow that`s such an amazing feat. And Christmas presents planned too!
Sometimes things will go smoothly and sometimes not.  Sometimes you get the double whammy of frayed tempers and cross kids.  Believe me when I say that everyone has had those days. ....even your Mum (!)
When you ` can` and you`ve done a huge spag bol or similar put some in the freezer for those CBA days. xx

Hi all, thanks for popping in. 👋

Beanie the fireman pjs/outfit look good, I think they will fit him, just need to hide them from him until Halloween now or he'll be desperate to wear them!

Nicnak, my problem is I get a bit shouty when I'm stressed but I don't want to be like that. Most of the time I manage fine by talking to DS but sometimes he just doesn't understand as he's only 3. I try to choose my battles and not get on his back about little things but some people interpret this as letting him walk all over me and getting his own way. 🤷‍♀️ I'm hoping the waking up is just a phase that he will get over, preferably very quickly!

Thanks jan, sometimes I think I can't see the wood for the trees and just have to appreciate that we're both doing the best we can. It is hard with shifts in some ways but in others it can work out well, as we have never needed to pay for childcare. Obviously we have also needed (and still do) help from my mum to cover the days when we're both working or crossing shifts but overall we've been very lucky in that respect as private nursery fees are very high. 😱

DS had a good morning today, no meltdowns before nursery, although he was rolling and jumping on top of his sister a lot despite being told not to. 🙄 So I did shout a bit about that as DD was understandably getting annoyed and crying.

I have been reading up a lot on young kids and their behaviours and how they can't control their impulses to do things even when they know they shouldn't and that you need to physically go and stop them rather than shouting as it doesn't work and just makes everyone more upset. It does make sense, I was telling DS to stop this morning instead of physically stopping him so he didn't stop. Mind you even when I physically lifted him off of his sister he would run back and start climbing on top of her again as soon as my back was turned (I was trying to eat my breakfast). I ended up just taking DD into the kitchen with me and sitting her next to me with some toys so that I was right next to her if DS started climbing on her again.

DS had a good day at nursery, his teacher said he is getting used to the fact that some of the other children go home earlier than him (the full day kids leave an hour before the afternoon only ones) and didn't cry today as he has been. Instead he accepted it and went back to playing.

My poor boy is very sensitive, he must take after his dad. DH keeps saying that he sees DS when he's driving past the nursery on his way home and that he always seems to be on his own. Now he's worrying that DS hasn't made any friends. I'm just telling DH not to worry and that I'm sure he plays with the other children sometimes too, he's only been at nursery for a month and is still learning to play with other kids.

Yesterday afternoon I made a chicken pie using the leftover chicken from the roast DH made on Sunday. Whilst that was baking I threw the ingredients for a goulash into the slow cooker and let that go for most of the afternoon/evening. That meant that today I just had to make some baked potatoes to go with it for dinner.

I really need to make up some "grab bags" that have all the ingredients chopped/prepped for particular recipes that you can then freeze and then just cook/chuck in the slow cooker when you want to make it. I already do this with the base mixture (the garlic, onions & carrots) for minestrone soup as it saves all the chopping - I always do double the amount and freeze half.

After I picked DS up from nursery today I got him to "help" me bake some fairy cakes and he actually did try to help. He was quite interested and seemed to enjoy it which was good. The last few times I've tried to make anything with him he's not been interested and wandered off quite quickly. 😂

Unfortunately DS has already had a few waking up screaming episodes tonight and think he's kicking off again now. 😔

I remember only too well juggling two under fives and working, it's exhausting. Unfortunately DS is at that age when this sort of behaviour is normal. My DGS is a bit older than your DS I think (he's 4) and he was exactly the same until fairly recently, thankfully he's beginning to calm down now. He was undergoing tests for autism and ADHD as his behaviour was so bad - he's being monitored as the signs are still there.

You're doing brilliantly and this stage will pass.  Make sure you get some relaxation time, I know it's hard right now x

Thanks SA, I was so tired last night and just couldn't get comfy in bed for ages. My back, pelvis and knees were really achy. ☹️ I need to make another appointment with the chiropractor but it's not cheap and we are skint as usual.

Was at work on late shift on Wednesday and was meant to be working Thursday but got the day off as work are having to limit the number of people in the office. Each shift are rotating days off between us so it was my turn yesterday and I'm not back until Sunday.

I picked my mum up after dropping DS at nursery and we got a few things in Mr M's for dinner. DD wasn't happy in the trolley so I ended up having to carry her around the whole shop, no wonder my back, pelvis and knees were killing me last night. Mum stayed for dinner and to help out with the kids whilst I got some stuff done. I made sweet and sour chicken with coconut rice for dinner, did a few washings and hoovered downstairs.

DD started crawling properly yesterday. 😍 She has been struggling to get one leg bent in the right position but finally managed it and was off. 😱 She is great and just plays around whilst DS has his dramatics. This morning there was a 10 minute screaming fit because he didn't want to wear shorts. 🤷‍♀️

He slept a lot better last night after doing a poo(!) TMI sorry but he gets really constipated quite regularly atm and he actually ate brilliantly yesterday and slept a lot better after managing to "go". He still woke up but wasn't awake for hours like he has been.

DH spent most of the day painting the fence, he's managed to get two thirds done now but is back at work until next Friday now. He might manage to get some done in the mornings before starting late shift though.

Aww lovely news that DD is crawling 🙂
Hope DS settles down soon, sounds like constipation might be one of the causes though.
Nothing worse than being in pain while having such a busy life so definitely worth you trying get sorted with chiropractor.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend x

  • Wow - your DD crawling already! Amazing how quickly they grow,  change & develop.

I wonder if it’s worth keeping a diary to see if there is any correlation between bouts of constipation and meltdowns...
