Back the existing machine up via Time Machine, then when you get the replacement simply restore from it. Nothing will be lost and all your installation work will still be valid.

    It's not a competition lol!
You asked for advice, you were given some, you didn't like it. I told you, from experience, that there is very little real world difference in the performance of the 2014 and 2015 models even with a taxing workload. It wasn't supposed to be a competition, I was trying to be helpful, as has everyone else here, in saying that accepting the reduction in price makes it a good deal, especially coupled with the minimal real world performance difference.

From what you've written you only became "gutted" with your purchase when John Lewis told you they sent you the wrong model.

No matter, given that you can supposedly tell the difference with your expected workload that the laptop won't be suitable you have your answer, return the laptop and buy the 2015 model.

The real question is... is John Lewis' offer at an appropriate level? In other words, is the difference in value between a 2014 Apple Macbook Pro and a 2015 Apple Macbook Pro more or less than £100? I don't know the answer to that question.
You are clearly entitled to that difference in value.

You say "I was over the moon with my purchase".
    Why are you now "gutted"?
Has the machine started behaving differently now that you know it is a 2014 model?

If you decide to return the machine, you will have no problem returning the stuff you have bought from Amazon. In fact, you might want to consider cancelling your Amazon order anyway if there is a possibility that the cases will not fit the 2014 model.

For what its worth, I would keep the 2014 device and gratefully accept JL's £100 discount.

That depends what you mean by "entitled".

He is entitled to return it for a full refund. Anything else is a matter for negotiation.

I'm afraid I cannot help regarding the difference in the specifications of the two models

But the terms and conditions of JL on line purchase is that a contract is not made until the item is despatched.

Had you received the item you may been able to sue for Loss of Bargain, under Breach of Contract .
However in this instance you had no contract, so JL are offering you a fair deal.

    Oops mis read OP .

In that case then there has been a breach of contract and he/she should sus out the cost of buying a refurbished model of the higher spec. and then sue JL for the difference under loss of bargain.

Have you had or are you aware of any successes in taking that action in the small claims system?

No personal involvement but the legal precedent is contained in case law under Robinson v Harman (1848) If care to google it.

Although a long time ago as it was a high court case the decision set a legal precedent, which unless later overturned by a superior court, which it has not,,it still stands.
