John Lewis : Mis-sold Apple Mac

Hello .
I'll be as concise as possible .

I purchased an Apple Macbook Pro online from John Lewis last week .

Received a call from them today to inform me that there had been a mistake with the listing .
The model sold was advertised as the 2015 model but in fact was the 2014 model .. the main differences being an inferior graphics card , hard drive and track pad .

The John Lewis rep went on to give me the following options :

1. £100 compensation
or
2. Return the laptop

Obviously I'm gutted as I was over the moon with my purchase .
In my excitement I had checked the basic spec (processor / RAM) when it arrived , but not yet got around to checking the rest .
After placing my order I went ahead and also ordered a new fitted hard case and a carry case from Amazon which will be arriving this week .
All very annoying and inconvenient !

My question is , am I entitled to any more than an apology and the options above ?
Or , should I be satisfied with what is on offer ?

I would really appreciate any advice you could give me on where I stand now .

Thanks in advance .

  • John Lewis have now updated the listing .
As I'm new to the forum (long time lurker) I'm not allowed to post a link .

    If you search
Refurbished Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display, Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB Flash Storage, 15.4"

the reviews left by fellow disgruntled customers show I'm not the only one for this to happen to

It was an mistake, they are allowed to correct it, either accept their offer or get a refund.

The real question is... is John Lewis' offer at an appropriate level? In other words, is the difference in value between a 2014 Apple Macbook Pro and a 2015 Apple Macbook Pro more or less than £100? I don't know the answer to that question.
You are clearly entitled to that difference in value.

You say "I was over the moon with my purchase".
    Why are you now "gutted"?
Has the machine started behaving differently now that you know it is a 2014 model?

If you decide to return the machine, you will have no problem returning the stuff you have bought from Amazon. In fact, you might want to consider cancelling your Amazon order anyway if there is a possibility that the cases will not fit the 2014 model.

For what its worth, I would keep the 2014 device and gratefully accept JL's £100 discount.

I'm not certain you even have a legal entitlement to an apology.

    £100 is generous if it's just a 2014 specification rather than 2015.

However, I'm not sure I'd want a "refurbished" model from ANY year.
  • I use both a 2015 MacBook Pro and a 2013 MacBook Pro that were supplied by my employer. I can't tell the difference in every day use (I do wonder why they got me the upgrade...)

I can't speak for the new 2016 models, but if you're worried about your new fitted hard case and carry case not being the right size should you accept the refund and replace with the 2015 model you'll be pleased to know they're the same size.

£1,400 (inc. your £100 discount) sounds reasonable for the spec. Would you really pay another £770 for a slightly better graphics card, a gimmicky touchpad and a faster hard drive that you'll never notice the performance improvement on?
  • Thank you wealdroam .

I was initially 'over the moon' with the laptop I thought I'd purchased .
I'm now 'gutted' because the actual model I received has a spec which doesn't match up to the 'over the moon' model !

I've only had it a couple of days so the shortcomings haven't been exposed yet .

My work involves use of processor taxing software , consequently the spec is important .

The real question is... is John Lewis' offer at an appropriate level? In other words, is the difference in value between a 2014 Apple Macbook Pro and a 2015 Apple Macbook Pro more or less than £100?

I would suggest the answer to this question is - no .

    Would I pay £1399 for a 2014 Macbook , no way .

I've ordered the aforementioned cases from Amazon , which will require cancelling . No biggie .
More importantly I've also spent 2 days loading software on to this laptop .
That's two days worth of my time wasted if I return it .

If money was no object we'd all be buying new .
You obviously have no experience of Apple refurbs Moneyineptitude !
You would never know the difference .

I was aware of that thanks :D
