Not buying any clothes 2017

Sounds like a good plan - it'll do me good to at least try and cut the spend down as I just don't need any more clutter and certainly don't have the storage space.
I would love to try making some clothes, but I wouldn't know where to start.:staradmin:starmod: beware of geeks bearing .gifs...:starmod::staradmin:starmod: Whoever said "nothing is impossible" obviously never tried to nail jelly to a tree :starmod:0 -

You may be able to find courses in your area, they have even cropped up in Adult Ed. Something like Intro to Dressmaking. There are also lots of books in libraries and you could try a simple thing or two and gradually build your skills.
I think I may well need to replace my shoes by the end of 2017; I have just the one pair which I wear for work and anywhere semi-smart. Everywhere casual I wear my trainers. If I do have to shop for shoes it'll be expensive as I have awkward feet and would need Ecco/ H0tter type shoes and they ain't cheap.
Other than that, I should be fine not buying clothes for the year.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I did this a few years ago. I knew I was leaving the office job I was doing the following year, so no point buying new work clothes. My new job has a uniform, so no problem there. Apart from underwear and socks, I didn't buy anything.
I have a good system re clothes. I buy 'going out' clothes, but not many as I don't go out a lot! If they get old/I get fed up with them/fancy a change they become 'ordinary day clothes/going to the shops/that'll do clothes'. (Although obviously not evening dresses, lol!) After that they become housework/decorating/scruffing about clothes. When they finally reach the end of their lives, I give them to the dogs for bedding/put them in recycling.
Saying that, I've still got a jumper I bought in C and A 28 years ago, still wear it. It's in the 'wearing to the shops' category, it's still fine.
I've also got a pair of denim shorts my mum made me 42 years ago;she had a new whizzy sewing machine that did embroidery and patterns so she made me these shorts and I lived and died in them. Once a year I get them out, zip them up (just!) sit down, cross my legs to see if I still can(!) then put them back in the drawer. Thinking about it, must be time to try them on again?0 -

Tried them on, admittedly I had to breathe in and poke my tummy in but I got them on, did them up AND sat down in them! ( wouldn't want to bend over, eat or move about too much but hey I got them on!0 -

Can I join please? I do not spend a lot on clothes as I wear a uniform for work and only need a few decent things for going out, usually the same things I wear for shopping. Any clothes I do buy come from the sales, charity shops or a lovely little shop nearby that sells seconds from the high street stores.
I need to economise to pay for a holiday in the sun in June. I may get some shorts and summer skirts but these will come from charity shops.
Good luck to everyone, especially those of us trying to lose weight.Grocery challenge 2026: £272/15000 -
I'd love to join if that's ok
I don't buy new clothes often, mostly from charity shops etc but am terrible for buying beautiful second hand things that need some alteration and then never getting round to doing the alterations. I definitely don't need anything as i already have too many clothes, and go to a local clothes swap every couple of months (i'm always gradually 'clearing out' my clothes when i wear something and decide i don't love it as much as i previously thought, so have a slowly growing stack of things to swap) so i can get my 'new-to-me clothes fix' that way. Not buying any clothes for 2017 will hopefully encourage me to get my a**e in gear and sort out my stack of alterations so i can have some 'new' things!
Good luck with the challenge everyone

Count me in too please! I have far too many clothes partly because if I buy it in a charity shop ( we have some very good ones in our area) I don't seem to think of it as shopping!!
So I plan to allow myself only £25 per month for charity shop buys (including books etc).
As I am also getting fitter and losing weight in 2017 I already have enough too tight at the moment stuff to shrink in to.0 -
Trouble with a thread that involves NOT doing something is that it's hard to think of what to say.
I am gradually trying to replace my black neutrals with navy as it's a kinder colour for a mature complexion. Of course everything I see that is right price/ right design is black grrr! that has definitely helped with the not buying.
However I do need a pair of navy chinos for summer to go with navy teeshirts and cardigans. I have a black pair but teaming black and navy just looks like you got dressed in the dark. So a 45p bottle of bleach and my black trousers have turned to a reddish poo colour.
However I know from past experience they will dye quite nicely with Dylon Navy to a dark midnight blue. It needs to be a dark navy because the stitching is still black - neither bleach nor dye has any effect on visible stitching.
We are off on a short break soon somewhere warm YAY!! Even if I wanted to buy any new clothes January is a bit early even for the High Street to have much in stock. So am having to be inventive with what I have. A bit of dying, a bit of sewing, some frantic finishing of a knitting UFO started last summer and I should have a small but workable hot weather wardrobe (our normal holidays are sailing in Northern European waters so you will understand when I say I don't have too many clothes for really hot weather;))It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I was thinking exactly the same!Trouble with a thread that involves NOT doing something is that it's hard to think of what to say.
Perhaps I should report back on what I have worn-to-death so its now only fit to be ragged.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!
