  • Just been looking at Lightning Maps' site. No sign of anything coming near here, despite the overcast humidity and yellow tinge to the sky - but there's a cracking storm near Aachen at the moment.

Retreated indoors as the sun has come out and it is really hot. I have planted out all my tomatoes and put all the remaining annuals on the terrace to make me plant them out later tis evening!

One side of the greenhouse is full of tomatoes the other is beautifully clear, I will definitely plant up some perennial seeds to go out in the autumn.

I scored some lovely tomato pots from Charlies store, they turned out to be from Waitrose I can get twice as many toms in the greenhouse using them so hopefully they will work well.

    Perfect gardening day here.

Bah, was that it with the rain? Hardly seemed worth bothering.

Hands up who has managed to get sunburn this week?!

I spent most of the day between both sites today. My back and shoulders are suffering for it now though :o

Fruit cage is now finished :j beetroot plants weeded between, grapevine given a light prune, more peas planted out at one site and the other was a case of transplanting some carrots from an overcrowded barrel to an empty one and mixing/filling 6 cut down lengths of drainpipe for "super snips" aka parsnips :rotfl:

We got so much done today that we don't have much tomorrow to do at all :D

Best of all, we had the first potatoes for dinner tonight :j rocket potatoes grown in pots in the garden and they were amazing :D I'll be growing lots of those next year

  • The thunder 'n' lightning finally made it here. Still not much, but better than it was.

Blokes going to travelling back home from gigging on public transport just as it rolls up to his drop off point.

We were hoping to have a mammoth clear up today but the grey skies may mean we have to adjust our plans. The girls get bored after about half hour on the plot so as it is only a few minutes walk away, the plan was to go up in spurts with tidying the house and chill sessions in between. This would hopefully mean we can get out and go somewhere later in the week.

My big stumbling block at the moment is excess soil. The plot is on a slant so we have levelled the area so it naturally inclines and in line with the plots around it but already we seem to have loads of soil/earth. The areas we still have to do don't need patching up as they look like there will be surplus there too. Any ideas? I can't take it our local recycle centre as you are only allowed one bag.

Yesterday I concentrated on removing brambles, nettles, sticky willys and bindweed. Not from the veg beds but in the flower beds. it looks so much better but everything hurts a bit this morning and I have a touch of painful allergic rash to the chemicals in sticky willys - officially allergic contact dermatitis - like exaggerated nettle stings all up my lower arms. I'll take an antihistamine and carry on today while the weather is OK.

We had a massive thunderstorm in the night with a power cut. That is my excuse for sleeping in a bit today. I hope to do a bit more weed removal plus paint a door, pack up some books and weed the onions and peas. Hopefully we can get the sweetcorn in today too. I might need to take that over from DH as he looked quite ill doing it yesterday - in the heat of the day he got very overheated and was working in full sun. My cue to suggest we get a wiggle on this morning!

Morning all. I'm planning on doing indoor jobs today as it's a bit damp here but have got the garden into a lovely state over the last couple of days.

I've been concentrating more on flowers than food, planting up hanging baskets and pots, but have also put courgettes and cucumbers in their final places and built proper frames around my runner beans and tomatoes.

It was lovely last night cooking a meal and going to the garden for spinach and basil. Today I'll be sending a bag of salad leaves and baby courgettes off with DD to use.
Spend less now, work less later.
