The number was 01242 093801 which is an invalid number. As far as I can see, any landline would not start with a zero.

BTW all UK numbers should start with a zero unless something has changed in recent times. My home number begins with zero.

I think what thrifty_pete was referring to was the 6 digit number not the STD part.
01242 is the STD area code for Cheltenham, but 093801 is not a valid telephone number in Cheltenham.0 -
This a very old thread and I haven't read all posts but just to say, if you want to reliably block nuisance calls, just buy a BT phone with Call Guardian (like the BT8600 - I have a version with a built in answer machine). Other manufacturers may have phones with this feature.
Take my word for it, I have had one of these for over 4 years and haven't had one unwanted call. Seriously, not one.
Nuisance callers, or their computers, are put off because, unless you have their number stored in the phone, they have to listen to an announcement, then say who they are, then press #. Only at that point does the phone actually ring.0 -
Bought a £25 call blocker and that did the same, tons of dodgy calls at all hours, Bangladesh I think?
Installed the blocker and barely any calls at all. If its a dodgy call i keep them on the line until im bored then i say sorry i just need to ... then press the block button which cuts them off and blocks future calls.
Also have the BT 6510 phones, limited number of blocks though, the standalone blocker will block 1000's and you can use wildcards.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

I've had to block only a couple of numbers - only those who I have given my number to and no longer want to receive calls from (e.g. those 'cheap' boxes of wine companies).
I never get nuisance calls, so I have no need to use the block feature.0 -

So you are uanable to receive calls from banks, HMRC etc that require a OTP (One Time Password)
Unless you somehow obtain the number they are going to call from and ensure it is already in the phone. Banks, HMRC, etc will not usually be able to provide you this number via their customer services.0 -
