Learners on motorways

The motorway driving element is absolutely the right idea IMO. Hopefully it may help to alleviate some of the problems of common driving errors on motorways (lane discipline, inability to use sliproads correctly, etc).
Minimum number of hours is madness though. I only had 18 hours of lessons in the course of a week and passed my test first time in the car, and my bike test was 12 hours and first time pass. If I'd had to do 120 hours, I'd never have been able to afford either until I was about 25 - but I'd not have been in the jobs I was in to make that affordable had I not passed my test at 17.0 -

A bit difficult in your neck of the woods though. Newcastle has only got 1.5 miles of motorway and Northumberland hasn't got any.0 -

I think it is integral for learners to drive on a motorway as part of their learning process.
I also think it is a good idea to bring in minimum driving hours before you can take your test. You and GTE Man may well have passed with minimal learning, and, without knowing you, I have no idea how well you drove on your own straight after your test.
I can, however, relate to someone who did an intensive course over 4 days of driving, who is the worst driver I have had the displeasure of being in a car with. You can only learn more by driving more. So making it mandatory to drive more before you are allowed loose can only be a good thing. Whether the number of hours is correct, that would be debatable, as there are things you only learn when you're on your own and you make the mistakes.
If it were up to me, no 17 year old would be allowed behind the wheel of a car on a public road.0 -

And the A1(M)? There's plenty of that. And there's work going on to upgrade to motorway all the way south to beyond Catterick.
The North East's a big place.0 -

So how much training did you have? You obviously rate yourself as a very good driver.0 -

I thought it stopped at the Washington services.0
