that works well and I might think of reverting to that system to encourage me to stick to my budget and cut down non-essential spends. Thanks Beanielou

Haven't done quite so well - do people generally count milk and feminine 'products'!? I also bought a slow cooker (hoping to make overall savings on this one!) and a set of scales half price as I'm trying to lose weight for my wedding in Apr.
On a positive note... I haven't spent anything in the sales between 26th Dec and 1St Jan (first time ever getting through that section of the year without major overspend!)

Well done on resisting the sales. I am a huge slow cooker fan

It can take a while to work out rules you want to work to. The main thing I keep in mind is why I am doing a challenge, my overall financial goals and my strengths and weaknesses. I have to be careful that doing a NSD challenge doesn't just mean I splurge like crazy on days that I do spend! For me that can be a risk if I aim too high or make my rules too crazy. At the moment I count any spending but my focus is cutting down on non-essential purchases so I might change to only counting non-budgeted purchases. Even now I would consider making an exception for a purchase I felt was essential. When I was working it would have been crazy to risk running out of petrol because I was aiming for a NSD! In fact when I was working my rules were more like Beanielou's and as I write this I'm realising it might make sense to go back.

You also have to set realistic goals for your rules and lifestyle- the harsher your rules the lower your target is likely to be.

I know it's the beginning of the month so it's pretty easy to figure out that you have three nsds...but please state clearly your TOTAL ie 'I'm declaring nsd#3 and don't leave me to have to work it out.It really does make a difference.Thanks.

  • Hi All,

Still on 2/10! It was my daugher's birthday so a few spends, never mind.
Picking up shopping for a relative today so will also pick up a few bits we need.

    Take care all,
    TPF.

  • What a lovely lot you are. I spend Mon-Fri basically travelling the 1/2 mile to work (mainly on foot - sometimes not!) and back so very little opportunity to spend... unless the internet exists. Which it does.

I am really trying to get myself in a position where I don't have any cc debt (£300 left to go on that) and where I have a savings fund for emergencies, a pot of money for the car and house, savings for holidays etc. and some savings for my son. So far so good and I am thinking about every penny I spend. I have never even noticed how much stuff my little one asks for until I was trying to save. I normally just buy it without thinking but luckily he is really good when I say 'no' - especially as he is only 4!

This thread is really helping, I have to say. Today I spent £1 on some apple juice (partner bought a NutriBullet) and 8p on some mint. I also had the pleasure of spending the school's money on food for an Ancient Greek food tasting challenge tomorrow
