I was going to update my post but you beat me to it, it only rebooted to 998 the very first time, since then it reboots back to the last watched channel. I'm presuming it is turning off at night but damned if I'm getting up to check

It doesn't turn off at all.
The box goes into Deep Standby from which it has to be "woken up" by re-booting. If you attempt to switch it back on while it's in this state you will see it re-boot and it will take several minutes to do so. The front panel indicator will show a much deeper red than in normal standby mode. It "wakes up" automatically around 6 am.

Why anyone would wish to check on this actually happening is beyond me. If you've set it to ECO mode then that is simply what happens in the early hours each night until you select another standby setting.
