Birmingham to London centre New Years Eve

Hi everyone, we're going to London For New Years. The plan was to use the M40 instead of the M6 for a short while and then straight down the M1.

This probably seems a dumb question but are the motorways as bad as like they are on Bank Holidays travelling down to London or are they not as bad?

Happy new year!

    You'll struggle with that.

    The M40 doesn't join the M1, it's t the start of the M6.

Maybe I could have worded it better. I have 2 choices

M40 (which I get to by jumping on the M42 at the NEC

    Or M6 > M1

It's 50/50 from there. One bump could see you stranded for hours but look on the bright side 90 minutes after you leave home you'll be there.

Spoke to my bro just, he went on M1 2 days ago and said it was a nightmare with 30 mins @ 50mph, I'll take a chance on the M40. :)

Why not just continue on A40 straight into centraL London what is the point of diverting onto the M1?

Thanks for the helpful directions for Whitehall...

All on road parking spaces around that part of the river (North and South) near the fireworks display are suspended on the 31st & 1st so it would be sensible to plan where you are parking.

My preference would be the M40 but keep an eye on the traffic along both routes before you leave and while you're driving.

I would normally get off the Westway (A40) at the Westbourne Bridge slip road as the traffic is normally better there and there are more options for avoiding traffic on this route.

For some reasons sat navs tend to take keep you on the Westway over the Edgware Road flyover which can be jammed with traffic and once you on it you're stuck.

Excellent. Thank you. The area closes at 2pm due to setting up the festivities so we plan to get there early. Yes it will be my second time there and I remember the Edgware Road flyover.
