    I'd agree with other posters - petrol, not diesel, for those mileages.

    I would go for the newest car I could afford. Go for a popular make, so you can get parts anywhere (and so can whatever garage you choose to use for servicing).

    If you want lower risk, go for an established dealer. But it will cost a bit more. The back-street garages may close down and re-open under a different name whenever the number of complaints gets too high.
    If it sticks, force it.
    If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
