Going off you having limited funds, I would instantly rule out touching anything brand new.
If you live 10 miles from work, that's 20 miles a day. Assuming you work 5 days a week and take 4 weeks off, that's around 5,000 miles a year for work. Not sure about personal use, but lets guess at no more than 10,000 miles a year, which is average mileage.
Now, depending on your credit rating, £5,000 over 3 years is currently about £150 a month. Would that be affordable to you?
You've not specified any requirements in terms of size, power etc other than cheap and reliable...so look for something like a Ford Ka. You should be able to pickup a fairly decent one for that sort of price. As long as you go to a reputable dealer, you shouldn't need to worry about faults at the point of purchase.0 -
Op, this is a cheap monthly price, over pay as and when you can

10miles, could you not cycle?
No. Given the shifts I do and being female and the roads I drive on being mainly lonely country roads, I really wouldn't feel safe cycling at all hours of the day and night.
I realise I'm being vague. Thanks for the replies so far. Some have been helpful.0 -

Harsh of you to recommend a car from there. The OP is looking for hassle free motoring...0 -
A quick look on Auto Trader puts the cost of a basic Ford Ka at about £4,000 (2013, 12,000 miles). I can't find anything with slightly more mileage around me, but if you could get one around 20,000 miles, you might be able to get the price to around £3,000.0

And those that are less so, are less so because of the vague brief.0 -
ALL cars are slowly wearing out, except the few miles it covers from new whilst it beds in..
If your struggling to save and pay the repair bills then a loan is NOT the answer. How will you pay the repair bills and the loan at the same time?
With newer cars you get bigger bills. Just had to get a thermostat for a Ford KA for a family member. Expecting the older engine so a £6 item. Nope £55 for a pattern part, not even a genuine OEM one.
£55 for a thermostat? And it doesnt end there on new cars. So many small items cost way more than they should.
Want something really cheap to run £140 a year comprehensive insurance, £zero road tax, So it must be friendly to the enviroment. Its a 1972 V8 Range Rover.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Might help if you told us what you are driving at present. Do you want a city car, hatchback, estate, MPV, sports car, etc? At present all one can say is that your mileage (work mileage only) doesn't justify a diesel.
If you are going to need finance, work out what you can afford to borrow and then come back with a budget per month.
All the replies you have been given are helpful, but if you go looking for second hand vehicles with such vagueness, then you are going to get stitched up.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Second the ford KA. Nicer than a corsa imo.0

If I was on a tight budget, I would go for a good make but unpopular model. I would avoid diesels and turbos.
Something like this should give a good few years' service:
