You were obviously able to get a refund in the past because the goods were sent directly to you as a gift.

No, I wasn't. They were sent to the purchaser. As I said, I could previously sort the returns myself, and find the order number through my wishlist as long as they were bought from it. My point is that they no longer offer this and it may be useful for others to know.

The bag is definitely a mistake. It doesn't even resemble the one showing as purchased on my wishlist in either looks, size or colour.

Were those previous orders purchased as a gift?

Sorry to inform you, but perhaps they no longer offer this service to you, specifically?

How many returns have you made in this manner in the past?

Amazon are becoming very intolerant of serial returners and you could even find yourself banned from purchasing from them at all if you are continually returning (or attempting to return).

Lastly, are you absolutely certain that your Mother gave you the bag she apparently purchased from Amazon? She may have decided to buy something cheaper (and smaller) and hasn't actually told you...
This is a fair point. Just because the wish list says it was purchased, perhaps she bought a bag for someone else and mixed it up? You are jumping to conclusions.

I'm not sure if they were marked as gifts by the purchasers, but Amazon say on their website that recipients can return items even if they weren't marked as gifts when purchased.

The procedure seems to be the same as before. It still says this on their website:

"Enter the order number for the item you want to return.
Note: Your 17-digit order number (or "Order ID") is found on the left side of your packing slip. If you don't have the packing slip, you can contact us. We'll ask for information to help us locate the order, such as the sender's name, their e-mail address, their phone number, and information about the item you want to return."

It's this part that's the problem. When I rang up, they said they no longer can give out the order number, even if you provide all the above details.

It's not just me personally. A friend of mine has just noticed the same problem. I returned two items last year and one the year before. None were for refunds, just exchanges. I buy a lot from Amazon and it's rare that I return anything.

My mum told me that she bought it from my wishlist and I can see the bag in the same order with the other things she bought me. Its very unlikely that she's bought another handbag for anyone else and mixed them up.
  • So just get the order number and follow their instructions. What has happened in the past does not mean that this is what you have to do now.

Follow their simple instructions and you will get the outcome that you desire.

Why would anyone attempt to return a gift? If it isn't what you wanted why does it matter if you haven't paid for it?

To be fair, the complaint seems to be that a completely different bag with cheaper specification was sent.

I'm afraid I still suspect you are prevented from doing this now precisely because you have done it repeatedly in the past.
That's why the above policy still appears on their website.

It matters little that you exchanged rather than were refunded.

We don't know for absolute certainty that Amazon sent the wrong bag, It could have been the OPs mother who sent the OP the wrong bag.
