;71821705]not practical to leave the router on all the time as the fitter recommended.

As I'm not able to remove the filter plate, there's not much I can do to get round the problem.
the router doesn't need to be left on all the time

just put the old faceplate back on, or arrange for it to be done, it's as simple as wiring a plug, and far easier and cheaper than getting power sockets installed

This is a solution which works for me:

Cable from broadband outlet at master socket to a home plug adaptor. Plug into mains socket.
In lounge, use another home plug at convenient mains socket. From that home plug run an ethernet cable to your router.

that seems an over complicated solution to a non-existent problem, and doesn't help the op who want to eliminate unnecessary/unsightly/trailing wiring

The op wanted to avoid a cable running across the hallway - sorted. As far as she is concerned this problem does exist.

how does splashing out on some useless homeplugs sort anything

the power socket is not next to the bt socket, hence a trailing lead
