ADSL adaptor

My router is currently plugged into the master BT socket in the hallway, but I would like to move the router to a BT socket in my lounge. My phone is also in my lounge. However, the master BT socket has a built in broadband microfilter and I been advised not to use another microfilter in the lounge socket as this will interfere with the broadband signal. So my problem is this - is there an adaptor without a microfilter, which will allow me to plug it into the BT socket and would allow me to plug in the router ADSL cable and also the phone cable. I looked on various websites but all I can find is a microfilter. Would appreciate any help/advise

  • Depending on what faceplate you have and how the extensions have been wired, the other socket may already be filtered. If so, the router will not likely work in the other socket as the ADSL signal will be missing.
  • Thanks for the reply, I should have said that the socket in the lounge is not filtered

How do you know? It is entirely possible (probable?) that the socket in the lounge is wired to the filtered side of the BT master socket *. So whilst you might not have a plug-in filter (or filtered faceplate) in the lounge, the socket itself may still be filtered.

If not, then you could move the router to the lounge and use a plug-in filter at that socket. (The purpose of the filter is to isolate the phone, not the router ... the router needs to have an unfiltered connection).

    * If you take the faceplate off the master socket, look at which terminals the lounge extension is wired to. If it is terminals 2 and 5 then it is filtered ... if it is A and B (I think) then it's not.

Connect the router and try fails then .

Stick a micro filter in the lounge socket .
The extension is probably going to come off the non filtered part of the BT master socket .
But as said it does depend upon how it was wired .

    Why don't you try it?

Because the engineer who fitted the filtered faceplate in the master socket told me that the router will not work if I use a the filtered ADSL plug. He told me that I need to get a non filtered adaptor to fit in the second BT socket which will allow the router and the phone plugs to be fitted. I looked on various websites and I can't find anything to do the job. I thought you guys may be able to help but it looks like it's more complicated that I first thought

Not complicated it works plugged in as is or it works with a standard micro filter .

Take half an hour at most to check .
Plug router in to socket as is .
Does not work add a micro filter .
The fitter probably meant it will not work from the filtered master socket if you plug a filter into that .

NO - he specifically meant that if I plug a filter into the socket extension in my lounge, the router will not work. I just did that, and it does not work. I need a non filtered adaptor plug to fit into the BT secondary socket, and then fit the ADSL plug and phone into it. Something similar to the filter adaptor but without the filter capability.
