He does have Apps set to 'only update over wifi' I hope.
    That will save some data.

Mobile data is turned off which stops everything from connecting via 4g.

£20 a month with GiffGaff gives you unlimited everything with the first 6GB at 4G.

But how reliable are they and what is the coverage like?

If he had it set to update over WiFi only he wouldn't need to turn his 4G off and make the phone pointless. Unless, of course, he's on it all the time he's out of WiFi range and is streaming a lot of video.

I've been with them since day one and not had any problems. They piggy back the O2 network so have the same coverage.
Another option would be ID from Carphonewarehouse. I've not used it but the prices look OK and they are doing double data at the moment. They use the 3 network.

  • He is with EE. He had one of their packs when he first got it. As well as minutes and texts he got 500mb for £10 a month. He found that most of the 500mb had been used in less than 2 weeks without even trying. He still gets to use all the fancy features, just when he can connect to a wifi connection. The only times it is an issue at all is when the wifi is rubbish. To use 4g would mean spending a lot more than he does.

Seems very expensive. You can get 2gb of data for less than a tenner. For example iD mobile are doing a SIM only deal for 2GB of data, 500 mins and 5000 texts for £9 a month.

I use my data 2 or 3 times during my working day to check the weather, emails, Twitter, possibly search for info on the web.
    I struggle to reach 500MB.
    Move along, nothing to see.

why does 4g being off make it pointless? he uses kodi, showbox etc alot.

There's loads of things you can do with a phone while on the move which rely on having a data connection. Only using WiFi seems to defeat the point in having the phone in the first place. A tablet would have been a much better option for use at home as it would have a bigger screen and would probably have been cheaper.

Nobbling the phone just because he's on the wrong tarriff doesn't make sense to me especially when the correct tarriff could be bought for similar money.

There are free wifi networks outside of the home. Unless he needs to check a bus time or find his way somewhere using google maps then he doesn't really need it walking down the street. He lasts £10 credit several months. Are there any deals that give data that cost less?

Not everyone needs a contract with loads of data, I've been quite happily using my Moto G on 3 PAYG for the past year without the phone having to be 'dumb'.

As has already been said, keep mobile data switched on but just make sure apps are set to update or sync via wi-fi only, turn off high accuracy mode in the location settings etc. That way he won't use much data unless like you say, he really needs to use it to do something when out and not able to connect to free wifi.
