Ok, my dad now has android nougat and now next to the bars that tell you your network strength there is a small x. What is this? The online manual I saw does not say. It wasn't there on marshmallow.

So it just means 4g is turned off? Well that's the concern over. He purposely turned 4g off because it costs a fortune due to apps etc regularly connecting to update. He only uses wifi for the net.0 -
He doesn't need to pay a fortune just to run the phone, he needs to review what package he has and with who. I take it that it's not a contract phone?donnajunkie wrote: »So it just means 4g is turned off? Well that's the concern over. He is with EE. He had one of their packs when he first got it. As well as minutes and texts he got 500mb for £10 a month. He found that most of the 500mb had been used in less than 2 weeks without even trying. He still gets to use all the fancy features, just when he can connect to a wifi connection. The only times it is an issue at all is when the wifi is rubbish. To use 4g would mean spending a lot more than he does.0 -
£20 a month with GiffGaff gives you unlimited everything with the first 6GB at 4G.0

He does have Apps set to 'only update over wifi' I hope.
That will save some data.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
If you're quick Plusnet have a soon-to-expire intro offer of £10 a month for 4GB 4G, 1500 minutes and unlimited texts.0

As Spud says.....The apps shouldn't update unless on WiFi, check his settings.
You need to get him to look at GiffGaff or similar. Unless he's not telling you about the video streaming he's doing he shouldn't use too much.
Especially as he does a lot on WiFi.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you
