Throughout the years I've noticed many mainstream British motoring press like Autoexpress, Autocar, and Whatcar always overrating the handling capabilities of Ford cars (Fiesta, Focus Mondeo) often citing it as the most poised, fun and best handling. I've driven Ford cars and while they don't handle badly, I found them overall quite boring and handling average at best. Whats with the motoring press?!

Have you driven every other car thats a rival to each respective Ford to know?

They're by no means drivers cars, but you can generally throw a Focus (and to a lesser extent) a Mondeo about moreso than say a Vauxhall

    Great acceleration? Handles well?

    You're pulling my leg surely...:rotfl:

Better than the Ford C-Max on the country lanes!

And yes, a 1.4 diesel engine in a little Yaris gives great acceleration!

I had a focus ST 2007 which had immense handling, decided i needed a family car and went for a 2010 325 BMW, after 2 days of ownership you quickly notice how bad a RWD car in in any type of condition other than dry, that car was quickly replaced!

Modern BMWs like your 2010 one should be fairly decent in the wet. It usually sorts its self out via traction control before everything gets too much sideways.

I've never really felt totally at ease with RWD "on the limit" though. Would have a lot more confidence in say, my previous Clio 197 across a good backroad than in my current Boxster.

Best handling - feels nicest to drive in it's class.
I would say that the Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo have all had a reputation for being the best, or amongst the best in their class, for handling.
Handling is subjective, but what would you propose handles better than a:
    Fiesta?
    Focus?
    Mondeo?
And we're talking about standard models.

And yes, Toyota have a terrible habit of making bland cars, Honda manage it too. Look at the first Auris for example, and tell me that's not a bland car.

These cars you've driven, were they brand new?

Once owners have fit new tyres and new inferior shocks/springs, thats millions of £ worth of development down the drain. Beyond 40k miles most cars will be on different tyres and most large cars will be on new shocks (partly due to owners going and getting ripped off at crapfit type places).

My 2009 Mondeo has terrible tyres (Goodyear NoGrip) and someone has definitely swapped the shocks for some cheap replacements (probably KYB).
New tyres and shocks are high on my list, as right now it's terrible compared to my previous 2004 Vectra. You throw it onto a roundabout at 2/3 the speed of the Vectra and it just carried on in a straight line. Yet ironically the motoring press really slated the handling of the 2004 Vectra.

That only means you aren't capable of handling a RWD car. Most RWD cars of today are perfectly fine in the wet if you aren't being silly.

I would have to respectfully disagree with you here. I would rather go for a Honda Accord over a Mondeo. Far better resale value and probably a lot more reliable, the same goes for the Avensis. I don't think Toyota/Honda make bland cars if you mean styling. Ford probably do make cars that handle decently well but the way some of these reviews are, its as good as a F1 car!

After market shocks are designed to the same specification as OEM shocks, so there shouldn't be a massive difference in ride quality. OEM shocks are made by some of these after market companies anyway - they are just rebranded just like brake pads/discs. And yes, the Fords I drove were brand new. I don't mean to say they are bad cars, I just though the motoring press seem to be over exaggerating the handling characteristics.

His imagination has driven every single car available and even some that are not.
