Money Moral Dilemma: Should I send back my accidental 'freebie'?

  • Of COURSE it has to be returned. Theft by deception is still "theft". Imagine for a moment that your daughter had a company making lets say silver jewellery and she sent out tow bracelets each worth £1000, by accident. Would you/she, hope that the client was honest enough to return it of should she pay for her stupidity and lose what will be £1000 off of the bottom line of her small business or would you say, "Of course the client should return it - its not theirs" ??

The fact that a 'large' business suffers the same loss, does not make it any less important as they have overheads and staff to pay. This is not a victim-less scenario. Even if one claims from insurance or similar, again it is not victim-less. Everyone pays a higher insurance because of those amongst us who feel such crimes dont cost anyone anything.
  • Morally, this should not be seen as a "dilemma" - contact the company & ask how they plan on getting it back from you (with you incurring no costs).
If they suggest you could keep it then eBay time :-D
  • This is a moral no brainer:- tell the company. I imagine they will arrange collection for an expensive item like a pram but when something similar happened to my daughter and she informed the company they said, 'Thanks for telling us but keep it.'
  • You should inform them - it could be a small firm with very tight finances, you could send them under. A big firm may say keep it, it's not worth sending someone to pick it up.
    THEN you could sell it.
  • I'd say definitely keep it. If this company can afford to give prams away for free, then they can surely afford to lose one.
Their mistake, their problem. It should not be on your shoulders to resolve this problem or waste any of your time in doing so.
You didn't ask for two prams, they stuffed up. It is completely up to them to realise their mistake and ask for the second pram back.
My advice, keep it in 'as new' condition for 30 days. If you don't hear from them, its yours.
  • If I bought this from a small firm I would contact them and offer to return it. Otherwise, it it was a large company such as Amazon or Tesco I would put the second pram in the loft for a few months. I would obviously return it asked, but if they didn't contact me, I would keep it.

Exactly the approach I took when my mother left her purse at my house.

I didn't ask her to leave it there. She mentioned she'd lost it a few times but never said she'd left it at my house. So I was quids in.

    That'll teach her.

If you were sent one item but charged twice would you want your money back?

    Of course you return it.
  • If you decide to keep it and stay quiet and not inform the company who've accidentally sent you two prams, you won't get the full value of the item if you decide to sell it.

What happens if and when the company realises its mistake and contacts you for return of pram or you are made to pay the full cost?!

I think this is a no brainer and I wouldn't risk being caught out as I'd die of embarrassment if found out and I hadn't of contacted the company to advise them they'd sent two.

Your choice - I hope you do the right thing and ring the company.

    Merry Christmas :)

Are you serious ? You really believe they can 'afford' to give away prams. Heaven help anyone who makes a genuine mistake round you as you will obviously attempt to profit from it.

But then perhaps you were joking..................
