Car written off and cheque received for less than expected

I managed to get through to him and he said that salvage is organised by the insurance company. I called them and they said it's all through the accident claims people but did tell me they have a salvage value of £0 on my car. So now I'm even more baffled.
The claims company say the car is worth £2000 but have withheld the £250 for salvage but now have my £250 AND my car. I'm trying to fathom how this is fair!0 -
It is normal to send the V5, but retain the yellow slip, to the insurance company who will deal with scrapping the car.
However, you need to advise DVLA that the vehicle is being scrapped.
The claims company are saying once the scrap merchant pays them for the car they will pass it onto you.
They need the V5 to scrap the car so are not paying you until the car is scrapped.
See this link for process.

You say above
However the claims company said if we agree to them dispossess get of the car they will get us the £250 salvage and forward this on.

Your first post says they are withholding the £250.00 for salvage, and will forward it to you if you agree to them disposing of the vehicle.
They're asking for your MOT and V5 because if they dispose of the vehicle, it becomes their vehicle, not yours, therefore you don't need the V5 anymore. All you have to do is give them the V5 and MOT (like they are asking for, and as sheramber already advised) and they will release the £250.00 to you.0 -
Sorry I can see I'm confusing things. I meant there is no mention of trying to get the £250 in the letter. Over the phone the guy said if we send them the v5 etc they will look to get the £250 salvage but they haven't put it in writing. I'm worried that in another phone call (after the actual insurance company told me they value the salvage as £0) the claims guy said he will try to get the £250. But surely if they have deducted the £250 from the engineers vacation they HAVE to give us this one way or another?0

If you keep the vehicle, you don't get the £250.
If you don't want the vehicle, you have to give them your V5 and then they'll give you the £250.0 -
I now have a further question.
I've tried to insurance the new car we are buying today but because the claim isn't closed yet the old insurance people are charging us a big fee as the policy was only a couple of months old. Is there anyway of claiming this back as we weren't at fault here and seem to be being penalised?0 -
If you claimed on your insurance, then it'll be a fault claim until your insurers recover their outlay from the third party. So your no claims discount and premiums will be impacted until your insurer can recover their costs.
Have the third party insurers admitted liability?0 -

Why are you taking out a brand new policy?
You should see if the insurer of your written off car will cover your new car.0 -
