Car written off and cheque received for less than expected

Why are you taking out a brand new policy?
You should see if the insurer of your written off car will cover your new car.
The original policy was only three weeks old at the time of the claim, so they want to charge me that plus an extra £255 for the new car. A whole new policy elsewhere would cost me only £290 in total.0 -
If you cancel your existing policy don't forget there will be cancellation fees to pay.
Check what the full cost of cancelling will be then make a decision.0 -
You will still need to pay for your existing policy whether or not you insure your new car with your current company or a new one.0

According to the op this is not a claim off the insurance policy and if that's correct and liability is accepted already by the other side then there is no reason why the Op would have to pay the full year on the existing policy0
