  • I agree with the posts suggesting giving food and toys instead of cash :)

Do you and your wife have joint or separate finances? As in when you say you have savings available, are these your individual savings or the family savings?

So I personally would not be bailing them out to the tune of £500. However if I had a joint account, or there was an account acknowledged to be both our savings regardless of whose name it's in, and my partner tried to veto what it was used on (without the fine art of discussion/compromise) I'd probably point out it was my money as much as theirs to decide about.

Let the other dozen people she has begged £500 from pay for her Christmas.
You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.
  • In my experience, people like this are often manipulative. Emotional blackmail is a great way for them to get money out of people they normally wouldn't speak to or bother with. I would agree with OP and avoid such families.

£500 is more than we will have spent on Christmas this year. If your wife is really concerned, she can could buy a toy each for the kids so they'd have something to open on Christmas. That's what I'd do for someone who was genuinely struggling.

    Definitely NO...........................

If your wife feels sorry for them ask her if she would like to give her a food parcel to the value of what u spend on your weekly shop.

As for the children, could your wife possibly buy a small gift for each child to the value of £5 each.

    Never ever lend anyone money.
  • Absolutely not. I don't know if I'd even do an online shop for them. As someone else has said, let one of the other people they've asked do it.

Offer to give them a lift to the Job Centre.

    If they really exist.

I think it's definitely the way your wife could go - buying the children presents and a food package. But I agree that if she has recourse to the money then it's her decision.

If there's been an error with their benefit, contacting the Jobcentre or benefit centre should be their next step, 0345 608 8545. Same day payments are available if there's been a problem .

Actually, if the Daily Mail, the important question is the value of their house.
