Upgrade your booking to business class and you should get the full 30 kg. You can do so using Avios.

If I could afford that I wouldn't be fretting about $60 per kilo for the baggage allowance! Airfare was already £1500 for an economy ticket booked in advance. *sigh*

I called Cathay to arrange this… they said no, I can't purchase an extra bag. Apparently what is said on the website means I can have up to two bags but the total weight has to be 20kg or I have to pay $60 per kilo. Can't afford that given the economy fare was already £1500!

The guy I spoke to said he thinks it's unfair that some passengers get 30kg but others get 20kg... but his managers won't budge on it. Pretty sad. Won't fly Cathay again!
My apologies for raising your hopes.

Yes, but you probably get Avios from Tesco Clubcard, from your insurance, from your credit card... when I looked into this I found that I only needed a few more than I had when I wanted a long-haul upgrade, and there are affordable ways of buying them on Ebay. No: I am not suggesting that you simply pay the airline for a premium ticket!
