Cathay Pacific baggage

I know solution is unlikely, but I thought I would post anyway in case anybody had some helpful advice. I've booked flights to Australia in July, to spend Christmas with my family. Am going five weeks in total. I had neglected to note that the airline - unusually - only gives me 20 kg of luggage. I am having to buy the smallest Christmas presents for family just to keep the weight down. However, the airline has now increased their allowance to 30 kg… For tickets issued after September! Essentially, there will be people on my flight was 10 kg more free allowance. This doesn't feel right somehow. I have politely asked the island of them might kindly offer more luggage weight, but they have said no and will not budge. I can take as many bags as I want, but if I go over 20 kg in total, it is £50 per kilo. This doesn't feel right to me; I feel like I am penalised for booking early. Any advice?

If you'd have been allowed 30Kg when you booked, what would you be saying if Cathay Pacific suddenly reduced the allowance to 20 Kg on all bookings made after 1 September? I doubt that you'd be offering to relinquish 10 Kg out of fairness.

Tbh I don't understand comments like this. You wouldn't do that, I wouldn't do that... But surely you can understand why I would ask this question though?

THANK YOU. I spoke to Cathay yesterday and they quoted me the per kilo charge. This clearly isn't the case. Appreciate the link. Going to speak to them again!

Dang it - apparently that is the charge if I want to take more than one bag, but still all bags have to be within the 20kg allowance. 😔

    So take 2 X 20kg bags?

It's $60 per kilo over 20kg regardless how many bags I have. :(

The second price chart in that link states "If your bags are within the weight allowance, but you have an extra piece, you can work out how much your extra bag charge will be per piece."

My logic says 2 X 20kg bags would be $60 in total.

    3 X 20kg $120.

Presumably payable for each leg. If one case is full of pressies there's a temptation to give away the case to save the fee on the return leg.

Upgrade your booking to business class and you should get the full 30 kg. You can do so using Avios.

I called Cathay to arrange this… they said no, I can't purchase an extra bag. Apparently what is said on the website means I can have up to two bags but the total weight has to be 20kg or I have to pay $60 per kilo. Can't afford that given the economy fare was already £1500!

The guy I spoke to said he thinks it's unfair that some passengers get 30kg but others get 20kg... but his managers won't budge on it. Pretty sad. Won't fly Cathay again!
