Have to say OP I know exactly what you mean. On the way to work each day this happens to me. We are all in a rush, all busy people and no-one likes waiting so why should some people bully their way through. When I say bully I mean literally push and if you don't let me I will smack your front bumper wing etc.

I have now put it down to just bad manors. It used to really get my goat in that for some reason they think that their time is more precious than mine but now????? I just give up. Let them in and think secretly ignorant pig!!!

As previous post said there may be people in the wrong lane hey it happens I have done it. But not every morning ignoring every sign. Think I have had to come to terms with the fact that some people are just rude and if that is how they want to lead their life so be it.

But if it is a genuine mistake, then body language is completely different. I've done this and look over at the driver of the car I would like to let me in and smile. They then tend to realise what has happened and will gladly give way.
The bullies on the other hand drive up really quickly, looking for a gap. If there isn't one, they just try and intimidate.
The police need to make a few examples. There is cctv on all major roads. Just review the footage and fine a few. A nice little earner and might make one or two think again.

As someone who sees that sliproad daily it's amazing there aren't more accidents. It's one thing to have someone who isn't aware of the correct lane to be in. It's another thing entirely when you've driven past a mile of static traffic, past signage and very clear road markings and try to cut in just before the slip road ends.

    Indeed.

When it's bad, that junction is particularly bad, because you end up with 2 lanes blocked by the queues (of 4 lanes overall). Anyone cutting in is then doing so from lane 3, which is ridiculous and highly dangerous.

The problem is worsened by the fact that the junction is at the top of a long, slow hill, and the lorries (many of which are non-UK based) often have poor lane discipline (usually involving entering lane 2 over a mile before the junction and then continuing to grind their way up the hill at 50mph).

Personally, I would redesign the whole thing, turning lane 1 into a crawler lane, and making a direct connection between the M2 and A229, if it is physically possible. A229(N)-M2(W) looks easy enough on the map, but M2(E)-A229(S) might be a bit trickier. Maybe taking the Northbound traffic away from the roundabouts would free it up enough to resolve the problem for now? Whoever thought that those roundabouts could take the volume of traffic, really didn't think it through. I can only assume it was done that way because of the geography.

Which makes the problem even worse, causing the issue that the OP describes. As you say, not everyone is familiar with the road and it'll only take a single car to end up causing a tailback in the middle lane.

Maybe reworded - I hate drivers that let in the queue jumpers who get right to the end and then cut in - if you're in queuing traffic and an unfamiliar road and you suddenly see that you need to be in say lane 2/3 but the 2 lanes to the right are slow moving then indicating and trying to get in straight away is fine, driving up until the lines are about to go solid and trying to cut in is not making a mistake, it's arrogant queue jumping

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Absolutely, question is how. An alternative redesign would be like M20 around J6 where the slip road is separated from the main carriageway by a barrier. If the barrier is long enough so it's before the traffic queue starts then all traffic has to queue in line
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
