This makes me apopleptic....

I am sure this is not the only place this happens but this really makes me mad.

The A40 approaching Hangar Lane is three lanes with the nearside line becoming the off lane for Hangar Lane. In busy times, there is always a queue to go off, so arrogant drivers, who think they do not have to joint the queue, drive down the middle lane and then try to cut in. If I had waited 10 minutes in the queue, I wouldn't let them in and most drivers don't, so they end up blocking the middle lane. This reduces a very busy road to one lane and causes huge tailbacks.

I always lean on my horn to show my displeasure but nothing seems to deter these selfish !*!"*s.

So you block their entrance and press your horn? And what if that somebody genuinely messed up what lane they need to be in... you do nothing to help the middle lane doing that.
Either way as annoying as that is you are not the traffic police.
One day you'll get aggressive with the wrong driver and get a shock
  • This reduces a very busy road to one lane and causes huge tailbacks.
So why not let the offending vehicles into the lane you are in, thus reducing the huge tailbacks.
You should also read the Highway code so as to learn the correct times to use your car horn.

The drivers in question may well be arrogant in thinking that they can do as they wish on the roads, but in reality, this is no different to your mindset.
By refusing to let the cars join the left hand lane, you are knowingly causing tailbacks on the other lanes, something that will inconvenience other road users.
  • Ha ha! I thought the holier than thou lot would pop up. You misread my post. I am one of the ones who wants to go straight on but find the middle lane blocked by morons trying to cut in. You missed the "if". -- if I had waited 10 minutes.....

So if it's just the inside and middle lanes getting blocked why can't you anticipate it better and use the outside lane. You may find it easier if you chill out a bit on the road.

Fully agree, can't stand the idiots who know what turn they need and cut in after skipping the queue - if you don't know the road it's fair enough but you would normally try and get in as soon as you realise, not drive past them all and they try and push at the front. Hate drivers who let them in

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • I don't know the road in question but is there any reason why you couldn't stay in the right land lane until you have passed the turn off in question?
Irrespective of what lane you are in, there is still no reason to use your horn just to show your displeasure.

Which makes the problem even worse, causing the issue that the OP describes. As you say, not everyone is familiar with the road and it'll only take a single car to end up causing a tailback in the middle lane.

A sensible idea in theory but what happens is that the drivers trapped in the middle lane behind the morons then try to escape into the outside lane which slows it right down or even stops it. The bad behaviour of these morons causes half a mile to a mile of jams/crawling traffic every day.

Even more of a reason to expect that sort of thing on your journey and not get so het up about it.

Exits vary. There's a similar issue at the eastbound M2 J3 sliproad (Chatham/A229).

There, it's complicated by the sliproad splitting into 2 and then 3 lanes, such that a driver cutting in at the last moment can just about justify it if they are heading for the less-used outside lane of the sliproad.

An experienced driver just has to expect that any exit + large amount of traffic can create a dragging effect on the main carriageway.
