Typically yes, although it depends.
If you have any older hardware or software you may want to run I'd check it will work beforehand. I've not had a problem with either, but people commonly do.
Apart from that Vista is very good. Even Home Basic is ok. It may be stripped of features (Aero will be the most obvious) but it's still stable and works very well.
I use it to develop on so turn most features off. Mines very reminiscent of Windows 2000, works fine for me."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
peop are sticking with xp becuase it has been around for 10 years or so and they know that with os from ms it will take a couple fo years for them to iron out all the bugs and ongoing security flaws
i have both operating systems but use vista ultimate becuase i like the GUI.
in fact that theres not that much difference between the os just a few different software that came with vista like media etc which xp pro/home didnt come with but was leater dealt with in the medai version
dell for instance where shipping all of their pc with vista automatically andf people went upin arms about it and they now give people a choic wether they want xp or vista0 -
Many people stuck with previous versions of windows when XP first came out because it was 'stable' and therefore was the less risk option ... many people are finding problems with older hardware and software not being compatible. There is a service pack due out for Vista (expected first/second quarter next year which should improve the number of devices supported .. prior to that though you may need to download drivers etc. for your particular devices.

Main complaint I'm getting from customers is that some old favourite software won't run on Vista, but I remember the same thing occurred when XP was introduced. Annoying that most suppliers aren't giving the option - though even Dell is letting you choose Linux on some systems. Personally, I've got no real complaints about it though I have noticed that one cheapo Vista laptop I bought is already slowing down - haven't had a chance to delve into what's causing it but it doesn't bode well for the future.0

I just recently switched my PC over to Vista Home Premium and won't be goin back to XP. The worst of the bugs are fixed now so its stable and works fine.
I tried Vista at the end of last year (I have a MSDN thing so I got to try it early) but there was a lack of drivers back then and I was running an older version of Adobe CS which didn't work right under aero.
I'm sticking with XP on my laptop because its a bit older and I find Vista accesses the hard drive a lot - something that is slower on a laptop and kills the battery quicker.0 -
Personally I wouldn't bother buying Vista to put on an old PC even if it is capable of running it. However on a new PC I would have Vista. I've been running it since January and it's fine.
In my opinion it's the least buggy, most secure OS Microsoft have released, even the driver support was pretty good. I do like Vista but don't think it's worth the cost of replacing XP if your PC does everything you want it to.It's my problem, it's my problem

Sorry for the DP, but why is there no option for XP Home or Vista Ultimate in the Poll? It's my problem, it's my problem

I recently bought a new PC with Vista (wasn't given the choice of OS) and have found my printer and two pieces of software won't work with it (can't find suitable drivers and patches despite lots of searching, but I live in hope). By and large I like Vista - it's astonishing eye-candy, but a bit like a mother-hen with all the 'Are you really sure you want to do that?' messages.0

XP's old, but not that old (not quite 6 years old):D"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
