I admit I did really a like it but was concerned about the mileage but from the comments above I am hearing don't and it is too expensive! What would be a good price for this ?

  • The price is way to high. How often was it serviced? Forget these daft long service intervals used by manufacturers to attract fleet buyers. Oil should be done every year or 10k ish miles to prolong turbo life. Some VAG diesels particularly the discontinued 1.9 can cover starship mileages. High mileage doesn't scare me if you pick the right engines and the servicing is up to scratch. Owned a few old 80s/90s mercs over 200k on clock and never let me down. In fact a dealer talked himself out of a sale when he said there was a million mile club for the model I had.

Update after doing a bit of investigation n ringing around I am confident that the car has been clocked so definitely not interested n buying it.

    LOL.

Funnily enough the car I owned that did most miles was a petrol - Nova 1.2 that got to 220k before I gave it away as it was going to cost £400 to MOT. That was mainly due to it needing a new windscreen!

My brother ran it for a bit after that, he was a mechanic and said it was fine once he replaced the cams as they were practially round.

I've also had a Mondeo diesel that got to 205k before the fuel pump failed and my current diesel, a CMax, has 180k on it but I doubt it will get to 200k

So yes, I would buy a high miler if the price was right, but I wouldn't pay anywhere near £10k for one!

You are getting into expensive bill territory there, injectors, DMF, fuel pump etc, all could go wrong imminently at that mileage and all are over a grand to fix potentially.

You might be fine of course, but would you risk £10k on a gamble?

This idea that Diesels are solid and reliable, it really no longer applies, not now they're fitted with DMFs and all this bolt on enviro/eco nonsense, like DPFs.

Totally agree - Turbo, injectors, fuel pump, EGR valve, DPF, dual mass flywheel. All of those can create havoc financially and are likely to fail at some point.

I've heard that many traders are struggling to sell used diesels, with people trading in diesel cars in favour of petrol, purely because of how much trouble they've had.

I don't think dealers are necessarily struggling to sell good, sensible miles diesels, its that they don't want to stock them as there is still so much risk to them for problems under warranty.

I can think of several dealers local to me who now only stock a diesel if its still under manufacturers warranty as theres so much risk of big bills for them otherwise.
