I am looking for a seven seater(to accommodate adults) and I have seen . A 2012 Seat Alhambra 2.0 Diesel but it has 177K on the clock....is it a good idea to buy a car with such high mileage ?

I have been to see it n it looks in good condition. I was a company car so done mainly motorway driving. It has been regularly serviced. The MOT was done today and there were no advisory notes. I did the check to make sure it had not been in a crash, or had finance outstanding etc and all was well. It was good to drive and the engine seemed great..it certainly drove well despite the high mileage. I like the car enough to think about buying it. I have never bought a car over 20-30k miles before. I believe Diesel engines should last a good long while maybe easily doing 250k. Cost 10,500.

Does this seem like a wise move or a bad one ?

I purchase my vectra 2.0 diesel back in April with 213000 on the clock it is now on 219256 and drives without fault. If the clutch feels fine aircon works etc then it should be fine modern cars will do many thousands of miles these days

This idea that Diesels are solid and reliable, it really no longer applies, not now they're fitted with DMFs and all this bolt on enviro/eco nonsense, like DPFs.

I've heard that many traders are struggling to sell used diesels, with people trading in diesel cars in favour of petrol, purely because of how much trouble they've had.

I wouldn't be put off by a high mileage (say over 100K) if there was evidence of proper servicing. But you have to accept that any car nearing 200K miles must be reaching the end of its natural life. I'd be happy to buy it and take a punt, but only at banger prices. I wouldn't pay over £10k for it, nowhere near.

  • It seems outrageous money for a 6 year old car with nearly 200k on the clock.

That seems massively over priced at £10500. A £1000 more would get you one with half that mileage. One with 177000 feels a bit of a gamble and you would struggle to sell it on with such high mileage.

It's done 40k miles a year, so it was either a taxi or doing airport runs. If airport runs it'll have spent most of it's life on the motorway and may not be too bad.

That said, it's a lot of money for a car with that mileage. I'd only consider it if it had a perfect service history and was immaculate.

    Too much money.

OP you need to check what has been replaced and when. Lots could start to fail in quick succession. Remember 7 years is the design life of most modern cars and components. Obviously many can go well beyond that but to mitigate that risk the price has to be right.

Yes It was doing motorway driving prob airport runs as a holiday business had it.

It does have a full service history up to Oct 2015(done approx 5000k since) and is in immaculate condition. It is the top of the range SE lux model. It drove really well n I would say the engine seemed quieter and smother than my current 2012 Quashai 1.5 dci.

The 1.5 dci is known to be a bit rough though.

It's up to you and it sounds like you want to buy it. 10k is a lot for a car with 177k miles on though. Simple.
