moving to Norfolk and buying a property

Hello

I would be grateful if anyone can comment on the following and give some advice.
I am looking to purchase a house in Norfolk. I am not familiar with the place except for Cromer and holt, but house prices are certainly more affordable. My daughter lives in suffolk so thats another reason.
I am a nurse so will be looking for work, maybe Norwich to start with.
My budget is not great, 150,000. I am looking for a two bedroom house/cottage in a village location or near a village. Im not bothered about pubs!.
I have researched the following places, the housing seems affordable.
Swaffam
Melton constable
Upwell
West walton
Gayton- really liked this
Fakenham
A few people have mentioned Diss villages- I have no idea what this means. Distance villages?
All advice welcome.
Cheers

I'm in Norfolk, looking at your list I'd quickly cross of Upwell! in fact anywhere close to Wisbech would be a NO for me, tbh I'd avoid most of West Norfolk. Kings Lynn was nice a long time ago, but not good these days.
Gayton & Melton Constable are both nice. The "Diss" villages would be those close to "Diss" -it's a place :)
I'm in Fakenham and really like it, friendly people and all the shops etc. that you need for every day, and Norwich is easy to get to for anything else you want/need, public transport is good and makes it easy to get to Kings Lynn or Norwich for rail travel, it's close to the lovely North Norfolk coast, Wells is only about 7 miles if you take the "dry" route ;), but also just far enough inland not to be badly affected by the much higher property prices that go with the coastal villages.

Good luck with your search :)

Diss is a town in Norfolk so I'm guessing it means villages near Diss

    You can't touch Diss!

Seriously, I'd give it some real thought. Some people find moving long distances easily but please be careful making such a big move. Have you tried staying there for a few weeks first to see how it feels?

You're looking at north /mid Norfolk then. Any particular reason? I live in south Norfolk and find the roads are less busy and generally quieter especially in the summer season, April to September.

Diss is a town near the Suffolk border and the villages around there are lovely. I would advise though you check out the local shop/ pub/ it will give you a good idea of what the locals are like. Around here very friendly and you'll be able to find out if there is any proposed building and where, even if just a rumour. Also look out for clubs etc in the village these are often word of mouth.

We moved from Hertfordshire ( near M25/ A10 junction) 15 years ago and can say we have found there is more to do in Norfolk. It depends what you like doing ofcourse. Norwich is good for concerts/ theatre as is Bury St Edmunds ( Suffolk).

As a Nurse you'll love the east of england.

My OH is an Nurse, and there are many private employers in the area paying crazy money. She's 1 year post qualification and about to go up to £36k.

Diss in Norfolk has a Partnerships in Care site, they recruit RNLD, RMN, and the odd RGN.

There is another PiC site at the top of Essex, between Colchester and Ipswich.

Cambian Fairview is on the edge of Colchester, with similar wages.

    Hi Borkid
No particularly reason. Just want easy access to Hospitals for work and buy my own home with my small budget in a nice area.
I am used to travelling, I am not phased by moving whatsoever.

I was looking at fakenham too. Sadly geography is not my strong point so reading Maps when looking at one location to the nearest hospital it like having a chocolate teapot, useless!

I will have a look at surrounding villages near Diss and Fakenham. Hopefully houses to purchase in my price range.

    Thanks for your help.

You're wanting to move to Norfolk, but you haven't even heard that there's a town called Diss? Riiight.

Rent first. Rent for a year or two. Be prepared to rent in different areas.

Sure, it'll cost you some money in rent - but your purchase money can be invested in the meantime - and it could save you from making a very expensive mistake.
